Volvo 440 - opinions?

Looking at these to replace the Swift. Basically after a 4 door hatch with a bit more go than the Swift but also being reasonably economical and roomy enough for a car seat in the back and a boot big enough for 2 dogs.
Had various volvos in the past and always liked them. Never really looked into the 440 much but they have caught my eye as a bargain. Just curious as to what peoples opinions are of them.
Whats the engine to go for? Any I should avoid for certain? Anything to look for or ask about before looking at one? Whats the real life MPG?

My Dad had a 440 turbo from a year old and kept it for 15 years till the scrappy took it. Was rust that killed it. Engine, drivetrain etc were as good as new. I've had about 5 480's with all the engine variations, turbo is definately the one to go for. I had 40+ mpg on a run and early 30's around town in the turbo's i owned. Engines are literally bulletproof but plenty people buy them to fit in clios and R5's.
S40s won't be much more expensive, you'll get something a bit more modern too.

We had a 440 turbo in 1994 it was very unreliable.
They were quite well spec'ed but not very well made, the quality was pretty crap compared to proper volvo's. I've got a feeling these were made in their Dutch production plant not Sweden which might explain the renault engines, dodgy electrics and cheap plasticky trims (or I may have got that wrong it was a long time ago). It kept having problems with the heater, dash electrics, door locks and other things.
My most memorable thing about the 440 was its unreliability. I remember one trip from Edinburgh to London and the clutch cable snapped about 40 miles after I set off - determined to continue I managed the next 400 miles with no clutch pedal just carefully timing gear changes (it was evening time so not much traffic).
The tricky bit was having to stop for petrol on the M6 around Birmingham - which meant starting it in gear to get going again - managed it though not very good for the starter motor!
