The public sector worker is the target Labour voter now. There is a whole generation of PS workers who have known nothing more than the huge (over)investment in Public sector jobs often in Labour stongholds with declining industrial base.
In many ways you cannot blame these workers, they have known nothing else and their lifestyles naturally depend on their jobs.
The article is correct on one thing though, we as a nation, dont make enough anymore. And once we get to the stage when everyone is involved in service industries, the inevitable decline of this once great nation will be irreversable IMO.

So apart from social care, the health service, education, law and order, firemen, defence, roads, enviromental protection, sanitation, the arts, housing, recreational facilites, streetlighting and the aquaduct, what has the public sector ever done for us ?poo at Paul's said:

Best not to assume this imo. The only person I know on this march did join the CS under a Lab gov, but that was in 1978, and I suspect there are many like that.In many ways you cannot blame these workers, they have known nothing else and their.....

The premise of the Daily Mail article is that those on this march were all public sector workers but, of course, and demonstrably so, this was not the case. Indeed, the most significant difference between this series of demonstrations and the ones of a few years ago is the middle England aspect of it. There does appear to be considerable resentment against those who, like Cameron, avoid paying tax to this country but enjoy all its privileges. It certainly irritates me.And were there any doctors there? Any dentists? What about lawyers? So not every public sector worker feels hard done by it seems.
I went to a meal last night with an electrician (self employed), a chap who works in a private school, a PA to a doctor (not public sector as she does his private stuff under insurances) and a reflexogolist who, I assume, is also not public sector. Whilst none went on the march all of them, including the freelance writer who was also present (and has been on any number of demonstrations in the past), were sympathetic to the aims of those on the march as they applied to cuts which, in the opinion of everyone there, are too deep and too quick. Plus politically and not financially motivated in some cases.
The consensus of 'middle England' was that if we can afford to cut the 50% tax rate, fight a useless war and incur the costs of the disastrous student loan fiasco we could also limit the cuts.
It's the Daily Mail. It is pure propaganda. It is not news. It is biased. It is a political diatribe apart from those bits that refer to Beckham and his ilk.
That said, the frequent references to the content of the Mail on line on these forums has shown me just how good the DM's website is. It's about the best of any online newspaper, even the premium ones. What a shame it chock-a-block full of rubbish.

They provide important services which enable the rest of socity to function they do not create wealth that is the job of the private sector, sadly in recent years we forgot this and spent more than we made hence money runs out and the reason small cuts have been made to ballence the economy, Derek Smith said:

Cameron avoids tax? In what way? I think that if he were doing anything out of the ordinary the press would have been all over it.shauniebabes said:

Thats the point!!! These things were being perfectly adequately provided for us 15- 20 years ago. Why am now paying twice the amount of tax and spending twice as much on day to day living?Paulo.dicanio said:

Brought peace?social care - replaced families and blood responsibilities - nannying like never before
health service - massively expanded and overstaffed - poor value for money
education - mismanaged to the point it's not delivering
law and order - massively overstaffed at the top level, poor focus, mismanaged
firemen - no problem there
defence - if you believe the reports, corrupt, inept and out of date
roads - need we connect here ?
enviromental protection - incredible level of taxation based on fairy tales
sanitation - this seems OK to me ?
the arts - not a job for public sector, never was and shouldn't be
housing - we pay for too much . . . far too much, too expensive.
recreational facilites - not a job for public sector
streetlighting - need less in most areas
aquaduct - do we have many left ?
