Cheap car insurance for 17 year old Male? HELP!
Discussion
Hi
What are the cheapest cars to insure for a 17 year old male? I recall people saying not to get astra/corsa/clio because they are the cars most young drivers have accidents in, and to instead go for something like a Volvo. Well, Churchill quoted over £10,000 for a Volvo S40 (actually, they couldn't give a quote because it was too high).
So, what's the cheapest car to get and what are the cheapest companies? There are 100s of insurance companies and 100s of potential cars so to call every company regarding every car would take too long, so it would be great if people on here could help narrow it down.
Are there any other things that can be done to make it cheaper, does it suddenly get a bit cheaper once you turn 18? Does it get reduced a lot after 1 years NCB? If it's going to be over 2 grand for several years then it's going to get over 10k in a couple years! You can buy a frekin house for that in some countries!
Under £2000 would be great but the prices have risen dramtically in the last few years/months so under £2000 seems impossible
Comparison sites are completely useless, if anyone has worked for insurance companies or knows some tricks please tell me, the people on the phone aren't really much help at all.
Thanks!

Many threads about this.
Look for a car that is less popular & crashed by young drivers.
Add your mum/ dad to the policy.
Try fully comp policy rather than 3rd party.
Which car is less popular and crashed by young drivers? Did you read my post? My point was that I tried getting a quote for just that, a Volvo S40 (A car not crashed by young drivers) and it came to over 10,000. Do you actually have any evidence or experience that cars crashed by young drivers make it more expensive? Isn't it more likely that cars crashed by young drivers are driven by young drivers in the first place becasue they're cheap?Look for a car that is less popular & crashed by young drivers.

There is no such thing as "cheap car insurance" at any age nowadays for the majority, if you are comparing to premiums from 5 years ago. All premiums have risen (bar the exceptions who will undountedly post on here now), but there are some legal tricks to keeping it down.
Classic Car insurance is not an option most are age restricted and you rarely accrue NCD with this type of policy so it's a false economy in the long run anyway.
- Limit your mileage
- Try to get cover for daylight hours only, that will mean having a black box fitted to the car, which some tinfoil hat wearers dislike
- Add your parents as named drivers, as long as they have good insurance track records. Do NOT be tempted to pretend your Mum is the main driver when you really are.

The maximum penalty for driving without insurance is six points and £1,000 fine so don't bother.
And the MIB bankrupting you if they have to pay out on a claim that you caused. And the CIE potentially giving the Police the ability to seize your car immediately if you don't declare it SORN, so you can add the VED fines to your list.
wait.
if you have passed your test, that's good, as even if you don't touch a car you premiums will drop for every year you have had a licence.
yes there are some things like classic policies on minis and other modest classics, but they are still pricey and limited + no NCB etc.
If you are only occasionally using the car, and not all year round, Tesco have very reasonable (relatively) prices for adding named drivers for a few months at a time.
Patience will allow you to save up for something special in the future.
Get a scooter or small engined bike or something like that if you need independent transportation without being f
ked in the arse. This will also help with future car policies.

I bought my Peugeot 307 from an auction so didn't really have time to take it into consideration but it looks pretty cheap to insure now, just had 3 quotes for under £1800 from a comparison website. It get's a lot of stick but I quite like the car, definitely won't win any petrol head 'car of your dreams' competition but it's been fine for me. Mines the 1.6 110bhp but looking on ebay there seem to be loads of the 1.4/75bhp one for next to nothing, could be worth a look!
May sound silly but are there not any manufacturers offering free insurance on new (small) cars anymore? I remember it being a fave of the Frenchies........
Could be an option, small, cheap, new car (ie C1 or Aygo or something equally dull) 1 yrs free ins, and the saving on that will probably be the saving you make on insuring another type of 'cheap' car???

Suggestions:
Cars - C1/107/Aygo/Panda
- Beetle, Series 1 Land Rover, Minor
- Volvo 340, and other 80/90's sheds maybe?
Tips:
Keep usage down - So, below 10k mileage, and only use it for commuting if you have to, otherwise mark it as S,D&P.
Put a female, experienced... driver on it. Preferably with NCB as named driver. Put two on, or maybe even more - trial and error. My mother and sister are on mine, but they'd never touch the thing.
Value the car realistically, and if its below £500, win. Not applicable in all applications especially regarding new cars.
Really, there are so many variables. If you're still getting shafted, move postcode, or get older.
Oh, and try insurers that aren't on comparison sites. In fact, don't use comparison sites, they're generally crap. Phone places like Brentacre, Adrian Flux and stuff too. Some place, like Brentacre are cheaper if your car is modified. So, a modified Fiat Panda, or something might be well cheap through them!

Volvo s40s arent cheap....why would they be cheap to insure for you? Get an old car that costs £200 and a set of spanners. You will learn something about how to fix cars for when you buy a TVR in a few years :P
Otherwise, much of the advise above is good. Ask about pass plus, IAM and trackers to see if they would help. Also I have heard on street parking can be cheaper than garaged secure parking, as people generally only put nice (nickable) cars in garages.
