Can't believe I've not seen this before. It's kinda cool, which is kinda cool, considering nothing, but nothing in the seventies was kinda cool.

What's pale yellow US car driven by someone who could well be a young Gary Busey?

Looks fabulous.

This film is soo much clsoer to the original "Cannonball Runs" of the 70s and 80s. the stupid stupid STUPID Burt Reynolds films will NEVER be as cool.

In what way? The Brock Yates runs from coast to coast were done in isolation, to set a time, not to race against a load of others in such a conspicuous way.

If anything, Burt Reynolds' approach in The Cannonball Run with the ambulance is closer to reality (I believe he had the actual ambulance used in a real timed run for the film), although his running with a large group of other racers is pure fiction.

But I do agree that this is the best of the "road" films around, even now.

I do love this film and bought the DVd a few years ago..
If you read Brock Yates book, 'Cannonball - World's Greatest Outlaw Race' according to Yates this was as near to reality as any of the films ever got to the the original Cannonball races in the 70's..
Originally they timed runs in vans with extra fuel tanks, but it was more of a timed event, than a Race. Raul Julia's Italian racing driver in the Gumaball film was a ironic parody of Dan Gurney's real cannonball drive in a similar Ferrari Daytona with Yates as co-driver..

Quite right, and I remember reading a report (in Autocar?) on one of the last races, which was won by none other than a Jaguar XJS, with a Merc 450SEL 6.9 close behind IIRC. Why put this on on Mothering Sunday, when there was no way I could sit down and watch it with my young son??

Everything in the 70s was kinda cool, except for this film, which is kinda naff, and spawned that Hooray Henry Gumball nonsense which still goes on.

Raul Julia is fabulous as Franco - Santa Lucia!

I've watched it so many times on VHS the tape is a tad worn and now have it on DVD. The sounds of the cars at the race start echoing through the streets are great.

Yes it's daft but it's great cars and huge fun. The E-type - a beautiful car, if only it ran wink
