Hi,

Currently looking at omega's as a daily, and I keep coming across examples stating welded diff's?

Can someone explain this one too me? Does it just lock the 2 wheels together, basically a poor man's slippy diff, only to be used if drifting? If so, surely this simply wouldn't work in a road car? Or am I missing something totally?

Its a LSD for steak and kidney lock openers, not really suitable for the road and it will have had a very hard life.

It's a basic mod for basic drifting before you go and splurge a load on a fancy uprated one. It works well enough for drifting but that's about it.

Absolutely no use for the road, poor thing will be under so much stress.

Flat out drifting or off road yes, daily tarmac is a no no.

Well not really, but in regards to the car you would want to use not as a drift bh - walk away smile

On the road you'd be looking at horrible wheel hop turning slight corners, and massive oversteer everywhere else. Unless you want to drive everywhere sideways I'd avoid biggrin

No, not really. I've replaced LSD on my drift car with a welded diff. Many people do so.

Most of the factory LSDs are not locking strong enough...

Also Touring Car racing a few years back - a welded diff is like a cheap spool type.

The Dick Johnson Sierras ran locked rears

It's all in the name. And LSD is limited slip, not fully lcoked. You can buy fully locked or lockable diffs such as air lockers or electronic ones. Welding the diff up is a cheap way of getting a locked diff not a LSD.

The main difference is, a LSD requires slip before it engages. A locked diff doesn't.

This is what I thought. So to wrap up, its every bit as stupid an idea on a road car as I thought.

Is it illegal to drive a car with this modification? Parking must be virtually impossible...

Piece of cake, you get the odd chirp from the tyres but that's about it from my experience. You soon get used to the initial lurch. Illegal? Nope.
