"Most people want to keep working when they reach 65, Iain Duncan smith claimed yesterday.

He insisted that higher life expectancy meant workers should - and usually wanted - to stay on for longer before taking their pension.
The Work and Pensions Secretary made the extraordinary claim on the eve of unveiling reforms that could push the retirement age beyond 70.

I don't think he's really got the public mood on that one.

THis. I fancy being a part-timer, though.

If nobody wants to work past the age of 65 then why are the government scrapping the default retirement age? Somebody must be pushing for it to be removed to allow people to carry on working.

I suspect that most people want to retire at 65 (or earlier) so they can enjoy a comfortable retirement.

However, I also suspect that very few people are going to be in a position to enjoy a comfortable retirement at 65 and faced with the prospect of leaving paid employment to live on a meagre pension will 'want' to have the option to continue working.

People are dumb. They want to work from 20 - 65 .... 45 years. They then want to stop at 65 and (given that a 20 year old today could easily make 100) live for the next 25 years on just a small drop from their final years earnings.

DO some maths!

When state age was set at 65 people had a few years doing nothing then popped their clogs. Now they want to be golfing in Spain at 80!

State pension should be means tested at start at 70 (min)
