Jesus fking Christ, how hard is it to talk to someone at the fking DVLA?

After spending quarter of an hour listening to that automated muppet blabbing every option but the one I actually need, I've given up! My car is currently SORN. I will be insuring it prior to taxing it (obviously).

I'm aware that I have up to five days after the old tax disc has expired to drive without the new one, but my current disc expired at the end of February whilst the car has been SORN. I need to make a 4 hour round trip the day after insuring and taxing the car

My question is;

Can I legally drive my car the day after taxing online without the new tax disc?

Be very carefull about the 5 working days rule. It is 5 days from the start of the month and not 5 random days depending on when you apply on line.

You can still drive the car, as long as it has tax/insurance/MOT but it is an up to £200 fine for non display. Non endorsable though.

I'll be taxing the car on the 5th (tomorrow), it still has a valid MOT and it will be insured. Obviously I wont have the new tax disc for a few days but I'll need to make the trip on the 6th. Even displaying my old tax disc which expired on the 28th of February, Im still liable then due to the first 5 days of the month rule?

The five day rule only applies if you've applied for the tax before the end of the month in which the current tax expires.

Go to a post office and get it over the counter, or drive without displaying a valid disc. Your choice.

You should be ok as the 5th working day is on Thursday. The old tax disc is irrelevant as the car is now SORN. As long as the SORN is still valid, which it is, then you will be ok. However, to be on the safe side, I would then keep the car off the road until the disc arrives.

The car is SORN. The exemption applies as long as the OP taxes the car before the SORN runs out. You are correct though, if the car still had valid RFL.

Thanks for your advice chaps. The problem has now resolved itself. I no longer need to make that urgent trip, so I can now wait for my new tax disc to arrive
