I have noticed a significant increase in irrational whinging about punctures on PH. It's this simple; you live in the UK, therefore you will encounter s
tty pothole-ridden blacktop, so stop fitting stupidly low profile tires on your motor! You do not need that extra 0.005G cornering ability, and you are paying for it dearly with poorer ride, fuel economy and greater vulnerability to curbing and other puncture causes, especially if it's not something spectacular in the performance dept. Besides, more modest rubber is often more entertaining as you can approach the limits without exceeding the sound barrier, getting a ticket or murdering children and small animals.

Great, well said. Shame that most cars sold in the UK in the last 5 years have had huge wheels with low profile rubber. Even my 7 year old Mondeo LX comes with 55 profile tyres, which 10-15 years ago was considered low profile.
When we got the OH's i30, we went for the MY09 car in the showroom, rather than the MY10 in the lot - the MY09 has 185-65-15 tyres, the MY10 has 205-55-16. We discussed it, and went for the 15" rims for both economy when tyres change time comes, for comfort, and hopefully less bent rims on the "roads" around here.
Unless you go REALLY pauper spec, you're going to be stuck with low profiles, or if you change the rims you're in to "modified" territory, and the associated insurance costs.
