Posting this on behalf of a work colleague whom is mechanically trained but has no interest in cars and modifying, so asked me for advice, as Im a known petrol-head.

His son (17) has just bought a 1300cc Mitsubishi Colt on a P reg, for a couple of hundred quid from a neighbour that's been stood for a while, as a project. They're going to do all the work between them and wanted to know useful places to source parts and companies that are "Colt specific/relevant"....

So far they are going to:

> overhaul the engine, major service and make sure it runs sweet
> full brake refurb - new discs, pads, lines
> suspension - possible exchange for new, but definite replacement of bushes
> respray - although I have advised vinyl wrap as a more cost effective idea
> replacement interior as original was FUBAR
> replacement carpets (moulded) as original was light coloured and FUBAR
> replacement exhaust system, preferably stainless as current one is rotten

Whilst I know most people will say "scrap it" their idea is that it's more about a learning curve for the son, who is an apprentice fitter, so mechanically inclined anyway.

My knowledge is more applicable to 200SX and Ford stuff.. So this one is a bit off my radar.

Any advice of useful parts suppliers for the specific stuff, would be handy. OR anyones knowledge of good breakers who stock these cars? Forums where sale-boards are in use?

1 specific request was to locate the fuel pump, as they were told (off the net I believe) that it was under the rear seats, but this turned out to be the gauage sender. As the car does not even run, courtesy of the fuel pump.

Since they have a large double garage, the car is currently being stripped to a bear shell.

Any advice welcome, thanks

Matt

Sounds like a lot of work and expense for a Colt, but I could see it being a lot of fun too smile

Not for a 17 year old who'd get laughed off the face of the earth when it came to telling his insurers.

Yeah that's a slight issue. I've advised he sits tight engine wise for a couple of years, especially as he'll be doing a 60mile a day round trip, doesnt want anything too thirsty.

Playing devils advocate, if the 1300 is knackered, is there anything as a 1/2 way house that could be dropped in? 1400-1800? Im clueless on this one, as the Fords I started with (Fiesta mk3) could have pretty much any fiesta/ekky/mondeo even the odd focus engine launched into them.

Think his priorities at present are:

Suspension - I suggested standard shocks, with lowering springs, as cheap coilover kits are usually appalling
Brakes - all round refurb and upgrade to mintex?
Interior - he wants black carpets, door cards, and seats.... does anyone do replacement floor carpets (moulded)?

Repaint car in gloss black as it's currently in some blistered grey/blue colour

Further to the last point on this, the colleague now has the car pumping fuel as far as the injectors, BUT cannot get it to start.

He has:

> fuel pumping from the tank, via the pump
> a spark
> but no fuel in the injector casting..........

Do we have any ideas?
