engine mount?

in the worst case, it could be crank bearings, but you probably don't want to think about that...!

They all do it. It is worth having the lamda sensors checked however (there are 4) and also to run some injector cleaner throught it. Finally, I was amazed at what a difference Super Unleaded (SHell OPtimax) made to the idling and general drivability of my car. (now sold and replaced by an X5)

Before the scaremongers get here.....

1997 & 1998 996's do hunt at idle - Porsche fixed this to some extend on the 99MY cars onwards.

Its better when the aircon in on. I too noticed an improvement when using Optimax. I would also suggest getting the MAF sensor replaced (if needed) as this improves things too.
I was finding the revs were dropping then "bouncing" up when pulling away which was irritating - the replaced MAF cured this. All pre-01 cars do this I am told to some extent but the faulty MAF was making it much worse.

A quick diagnostic check should tell you.
