This kind of gymnastic stuff - front levers, planches, muscle ups, typewriters etc has become very popular and you need immense upper body strength
to even start training for the progressions to a lot of these.Impressive stuff and loads on ytube.

The routines that Hannibal et al do on the bars are mostly all level a or level b exercises that many county level gymnasts can do.

Ah yes,the old "insert my head in the ceiling" excuse.

The muscle up thing - I can do double dynos without feet. Just build up momentum and power through. Even an old b
d like me can do that... after 6 hours of climbing. This kinda s

Good exercise and, once again, technique and practice is everything.Like you say - very similar to muscle ups.
When it gets easy you can try it with a dumbbell stuck under your belt!
Yeah, I was just reading that beastskills.com. One thing I keep meaning to do is a proper one-handed pull up. It suggests doing weighted pull ups. I can do assisted one-handed pull ups eg with one finger of other hand or a towel. But full on, it hurts my back for some reason. When it gets easy you can try it with a dumbbell stuck under your belt!

Bet they're all midgets.
Ha,yes. Also very little fat and an excellent bodyweight/power ratio.Although gymnastics do favour a certain bodytype, small and compact, and long levers are a disadvantage - so some are fairly small. This is
Beth Tweddle,6x British Champion, and easily capable of all the exercises shown in previous youtube clips. And she's a midget.

Hmm..if it hurts you best rest it and try something else.Front lever is quite good for climbing I've been told..maybe you do these?
Yeah, been working on these. That used to hurt my back, too! Did lots of lower back work so it doesn't hurt any more but still can't do them.RemainAllHoof said:

Patience. Front Lever is a very hard exercise to learn. If your back hurts with these as well I would suggest some advanced abs exercises for a couple of months..

Well, can't do flag. That bloody hurt, too. Leg raises to bar - have been doing them (I found it works the abs more than just leg raises to horizontal... obvious when you think about it); thing is, I found bent leg raises to hanging foetal position was just as good and meant I could work the abs more equally as straight leg raises meant I was working more the lower section than the upper section... thoughts?flags,ab roller, hanging leg raises (to bar,4x10) ,these are VERY hard exercises, and not many can even attempt them so well done. Some lever tips..

Edit: that site's good. Can do the front tucked lever. Will try one leg bent front front lever over the weekend (can't do anything for next couple of days as intend to do a mammoth climbing session tomorrow or Thursday and need to recover from yesterday's session).

So what's the story with these guys? Do they also use the more conventional stuff such as bench press, dead lifting, bicep curls and all the usual gym stuff or is it just a case that doing compound exercises such as pull ups, front levers, muscle ups and all that jazz really achieves such a defined look with mass to go with it?

Bent leg raises are very good as an abs exercise;the same exercise with straight legs should hit upper abs more. With your legs straight the entire rectus abdominushas to work harder as the lever is longer and it travels further.Bent leg raises - straight leg raises - L sits etc.Try to make sure your body doesn't swing at all.
Also HSLRs are a strength exercise that work more than just abs, whereas bent legs is just abs training.

Gymnastics training can be used to compliment weight training/climbing/martial arts etc. However weight training, with few exceptions, rarely compliments gymnastics.
I must point out again though that these guys are very good, but there are teenagers in gymnastics who can do the same.Just doesn't look as good
as some of the ripped black guys on youtube!
