Collecting A Car Without An MOT

What are my options for collecting a drivable car that has no MOT?

I need to get it from the sellers place in Cardiff to my place in Bristol, as far as I can see it, the only way to get it home is to trailer it.

So I'm guessing if you book an MOT for the car and pick it up to drive it to the test you'd be OK.

You may want to double check with the Police etc !

Probably worth getting a couple of prices from local recovery firms - especially if the collection / delivery is not time critical. You may get a good price if they already have a vehicle movement in the opposite direction.

Has the car already failed an MOT? Might it pass?

It's just a case of expaired MOT, no reason it should fail AFAIK.

That was my thoughts on it, there is a garage in the village, only 3mins walk from home.

I understand the ABI position to be that they will payout all third party claims in cases like no MOT or drink driving, but may chose to reduce the fully comp payout?

Edit - I'm not condoning driving a car with no MOT!

True, but the insurance company could try to recover their costs from the policyholder.

Not all companies make MOT a condition of the insurance though.

Is the car insured (by anybody) at the moment and on the askMid database? Snag with new insurance is it won't show for a while and that increases your chances of being stopped dramatically.

Probably not for this thread but what is the acceptable distance? I've driven cars 10+ miles to MOT stations near my home rather than to one where I bought the car from just because I trust them more not to rip me off. I wouldn't have thought 10 miles would be a problem but knowing what a reasonable upper limit is would be nice.

If the car is roadworthy and there are no obvious faults, bald tyres, wings hanging off etc then it is perfectly legal to drive it to a pre-arranged MoT test.

The test can be anywhere and there is no restriction on the distance you can drive, just you have to go directly to the garage.

When my friend was in court he got a fine to prove otherwise.

He can't have done. There's no stated limitation on the distance. He must have said he was going home first, or something similar.

No MOT is £60 fine as long as the car is roadworthy, but it is anpr-able now so you could be stopped.

Looks like it's going to cost £50-70 to get it delivered. Not worth pissing about with no MOT for that, far easier to pay somebody.

What did he get a fine for, and what were the circumstances?

He drove it 150 miles when moving house- no MOT so booked it at the other end, just in case it failed & he could go a short distance to the new place. Pulled & prosecuted.

It was about 4 years ago.
