Engineers left to it??

Have been trawling the usual online car markets for a new/or nearly car lately and the major selling points seem to be MPG (or lab massaged MPG) CO2 output and general 'greeness' of each vehicle.
Now this got me thinking......we seem to be saying goodbye to large capacity/high revving normally aspirated engines in favour of smaller capacity forced induction lumps. So quick question, where do you think we would be if MPG did not matter, CO2 had never been heard of (from an emmisions point of view) and car designers/engineers could just make the type of car THEY/WE wanted and not what is forced upon them by the governments and greenies?????
What type of engines do you think we would be fantasising about in our daily drives and weekend toys??? Would lighter less powerful cars still be popular or would we all be driving around in V12's?????

What happened to the Alfa Romeo engine that was going to be a 2litre V8 with superb economy and performace. I'm sure it was being lorded in the motoring press only 18 months ago.
