Rolex, what`s it worth?
Discussion
Sorry for late reply but thanks to all who posted.
It certainly is priceless to me, I remember my Dad wearing the watch as it often used to catch the hairs on his wrist and he would shake it to release them! I would never sell it but I would like to know what it`s worth. Interesting that some think it may be better to leave as is. I have been quoted £30 for a new screen which I will probably have done as I like wearing it.

Tim,
If you want an idea of the value of your Dad's watch, post the model number and the first 2 numbers of the serial number (to confirm year of manufacture). A couple of photos would help too.
The model number is engraved onto the case side at 12 o'clock, the serial number is engraved onto the case at 6 o'clock. The numbers are not visible with the bracelet in place. The bracelet is very simple to remove, it's help in place by a spring bar. To release the bar, push a pin into the hole visible on the side of the case. Do this both sides and ease the bracelet out. If you post the info, then we'll have a much better idea of determining the value of the watch.

Well taking off the strap was tricky but gave me the chance to clean that area. If you want an idea of the value of your Dad's watch, post the model number and the first 2 numbers of the serial number (to confirm year of manufacture). A couple of photos would help too.

The model no is 5500 and the first two numbers of serial no are 97.
I have to wait till my son is here to help with posting pictures but if it helps the face is black and the hour hand has a design on it like Mercedes badge.
What is your opinion on having the glass replaced? It is lightly scratched I suppose through usage but nothing very deep.
Regards Tim
In my opinion there's no point keeping a watch scruffy just for the sake of it! It's not a Le Mans winning Bentley or anything!
No need to replace anything, just have what there is lightly polished, including the crystal - it's acrylic so will come up very well, all but deep scratches will disappear. Just don't let anyone touch the dial! I'd also consider sourcing a light oyster link bracelet, preferably a rivetted one, they come up on eBay every now and again. Yours is wearing a Jubilee, it is a correct optional bracelet but the oyster is preferred and looks better.
5500 is a lovely watch, shame it isn't a 1016 which would have had 'Superlative Chronometer Officially Certifed' and from memory have a 36mm case instead of 34mm.
FYI, a tidy one will ask this kind of cash http://www.watches.co.uk/watch/9698s/rolex-vintage... and probably get a little bit less. Privately, £2800-3k is probably right.
Values are only going up, if you don't need to sell it... then don't!
