Quickest point-to-point car for £20k?
Discussion
Wondering what it is. I'm thinking 996 Turbo.
Initially I thought Caterham R300 but in the wet it would be quite slow unless you are Loeb, and even in the dry methinks its lack of ABS or TC would make it difficult to harness its full potential. Same thing for the Ariel Atom 160.
BMW M3 CSLs are fairly quick, as are E60 M5s.
Then there are the AWD cars like EVOs, Imprezas and the Audi RS4, but other than the EVO, am not so sure the extra weight of AWD and their propensity for understeer makes them as mental as one may initially think.
I think its either the 996T or an S2 Exige.

If u bring poor surfaces and low friction into the equation, then the AWD cars u mentioned are about right. If we're talking goid tarmac, the test drivers I know at work, say the e46 m3 is way faster in the bends than the heavier and less nimble AWD cars. Then again a 7 will piss all over everything on the windy stuff.

I don't think the RS4 will be able to keep pace with an Impreza or an Evo over challenging tarmac. It might be 4WD but it's big and understeery IIRC. I'd guess an Impreza or an Evo will be the quickest one. If you're Miki Biasion you might have more luck in something RWD but for the average man I doubt you'll cover ground quicker than a Lancer or a Scooby for that kind of money. E55 AMG if you're talking point to point. The immense low end torque just makes them so easy to be fast around town, and even on the motorways. It would be as quick as a 996 turbo in a straight line, maybe quicker.
Problem with the 911 turbo is (and mine is the 997 with supposedly no lag) by the time you have enough boost for a lot of thrust, the opportunity to nip ahead of the other car is gone, and you are surging towards someone's boot!
Also I wouldn't buy a 20k 996 turbo. You could buy an E55 AMG and send it to DMS and still have change for 20k!
If it's wet though... E55 = rubbish.

Evo 8 or RB320. You can hammer it to the absolute limit for every inch of your trip. Thats off the shelf stuff though. Fastest point to point car, ?????? Depends on circumstances. In some it would be a Atom or R400, others it would be a tuned RB5 or Evo
4wd and turbo'd with all the gizmos

Any hire car. Nothing is faster than a car that isn't yours.

I reckon one of the fastest p2p cars is Litchfields Type 25.
He normally has a few in stock in your budget, the one I had in mind has sold:

Apart from the beens under the bonnet he has seriously set it up well for British roads. I'm not a big scooby fan, but if it was all out p2p performance I was after I would consider one in that budget.
Wouldn't touch any impreza that has a 2.5 bottom end including the type 25 with all the cosworth bits as they are all prone to engine failure. The block wasn't designed to displace 2.5l!
I would go for a STI SPEC C it is without a shadow of a doubt the fastest p2p car out there once it has stage one mods. The way the car handles out the boxes is just stupid!
I would also reccomend the new Lichfield 400bhp turbo! Nissan GTR performance for 20k!

Interesting, I thought they put the JDM 2.5 in them?I would go for a STI SPEC C it is without a shadow of a doubt the fastest p2p car out there once it has stage one mods. The way the car handles out the boxes is just stupid!

A Caterham without question. Preferably with 200+ bhp giving about 400 bhp/tonne (though with the caveat that they are indeed very difficult in the wet). They benefit from their narrowness on windy roads allowing you to take very quick lines.
By way of example, roadgoing Caterhams approaching 500bhp/tonne are quicker up Prescott hillclimb than a
Bugatti Veyron. No other tin-tops get close.

This was meant to be pure internet conjecture but it is indeed a question I'm considering, albeit not for a few months.
Currently, I'm on 2 wheels, will soon be commuting not the 10miles a day I do now, but 100 down B-roads and can't be arsed to do it on a bike.
Practicality isn't a consideration, and here in Ireland police are few and far between and I've never heard of anyone going to prison for big speeds unlike the UK, so my only real criteria is that it be mentally fast.
My budget is actually around £30-35k and I was either going to
a) spend it all on a car, the quickest one I could afford or
b) spend about £20-25k on a car, and then another £10k on a bike, specifically the BMW S1000RR, which for you non-bikers on here was that fast bike that James May/Tiff Needell raced the Atom V8 against on Top Gear
Was seriously thinking about a Caterham CSR260 as I thought it would give me the same thrills my bike gives me, but living with a bike over the winter has worn my tolerance for taking as long to get kitted up as my gf takes when we go out for dinner. My tolerance for being cautious on cold, wet asphalt and basically riding on pins and needles has also decreased; I have a feeling that in winter the Caterham will give all the compromises of a bike, and not enough of the benefits (namely ability to filter)
I was also considering an Atom for the same reason, and I think it could be even more fun than the Caterham but having to face the prospect of an hour and a bit commute on a cold wet morning would be soul-destroying I think.
I drove an M3 CSL recently and liked that, obviously it isn't as quick as the aforementioned two but would be quicker in autumn/winter point-to-point. Plus its wonderfully loud when you press the sport button, so that adds a bit of that "bikelike" involvement I crave. It would be more secure approaching a wet corner than the Caterham or Atom, but still not as much as the AWD cars mostly due to its Pilot Sport Cup tyres being not v. good in the wet. Unfortunately, people say that if you replace the tyres, the car is not nearly as good anymore in the dry so its a bit of a lose-lose situation in that regard.
I haven't driven an Exige yet but I plan to, as I think that could offer some of the involvement of the first two, with the comfort and safety aids of a normal car. Roads in Ireland are a lot bumpier and more poorly maintained than roads in the UK however, and I'm not so sure that a car as low as the Exige will be able to cope (we also have quite a few speed humps here).
I don't think the AWD cars (Audi RS4, Scoob, Evo, 996T) would be as tactile to drive as the listed RWD cars but if they are a lot quicker, then I think I could get enjoyment from the sheer rollercoasterlike sensation of speed, rather than steering feel or handling balance.
I plan to take a few trips, to the Nurburgring, Scotland, and perhaps to the south of France, but likely won't be doing any trackdays (save for the 'Ring)

Unmodified I'd go along with the Evo VIII FQ400. 405Bhp, 0-60 in 3.5s and top speed of 175mph, but just as importantly has AWD and suspension that can cope with the crap state of a lot of UK roads and also would be hugely capable in the wet.
Modified, well I've seen Skylines with 600Bhp for sale around 10 grand, so chuck another 10 at it including Nitrous and I reckon you would be looking at 700Bhp+.
