Ate here whilst I was on hols, truly impressive !

The Burj Khalifa is an awesome building and the Atmosphere restaurant is exceptionally good. The four of us went for the tasting menu, which was exceptional.

It has a good wine list though not as extensive as you would expect in such a high end place.

It definately rivals any of the michelin restuarants in Europe and I would strongly recommend it !

The bar is also great, with awesome views over the Dubai skyline.

Pity it's in Dubai really. Not a place I'd ever want to visit!

You stick to rochester, then; we won't miss you and your blinkered view of life over here

My view isn't 'blinkered' at all. The main reason I wouldn't want to visit is that it's simply too bloody hot there. Are you saying it's actually not hot at all? wink

Or are you just on the defensive because of all the horror stories on the web about Dubai (which I personally don't read very much into, as I have MANY work colleagues who live there, working as I do in the oil business)

Oh, and I don't stick to Rochester... I travel extensively with my job, thank you very much. biggrin

lol... no Tony! The company I work for is a seismic exploration company, and we have a fleet of ships that do work for oil companies, providing them with detailed surveys of the geology under the seabed. I'm a Marine Business Analyst, and responsible for all the accounting issues relating to two of the ships.

Maybe he doesn't want to go because it's a gaudy and tacky with absolutely no culture? Just saying...

I'm guessing either:

a. you've never been

b. you're lazy so stick around all the touristy bits which are tacky and souless

Zzzzz very boring and stupid comment; fair enough if you don't like it, just telling you there's more to Dubai than the 'shiny' things which I apparently love so much. If you wish to remain so narrow-minded, though, be my guest. smile

I grew up in Scotland. Anything over about 17c is a heatwave.

Having been round most of the countries in the region, I'll say that Dubai is all about the wow factor. It has no historic culture to speak of. In fact they did used to have a historic culture, and then when it got in the way of shiny development it all got bulldozed. Now, when they've realised that the oil industry is on the wane and tourism is going to be needed, they're building their history again. Problem is, it looks fake.

Dubai's good for a few days, any more and it's too much bling.

You want real culture in the middle east, head for Oman. Genuine friendly people with really nice hospitality and food (avoid the goat and camel heads though). Muscat has some nice places to go to.

I promise I will not comment on the pro/anti Dubai issue. I love the place, great weather, great golf, some superb restaurants and fantastic friends who we like to visit from time to time. It is not for everyone, but then so is Benidorm !

Anyway back to the restaurant......

Arrived at the Khalifa, an aray of cars outside - phantoms, lambos and ferraris. Meeted & greeted by the very slick staff in reception and shown to the lift, straight up to the 123rd floor but then you take the stairs down to the 122nd for some reason ? !

An awesome dining room, it was my birthday so they put us at a window table with simply stunning views !

We all agreed to have the tasting menu...

I think it was 7 courses for 700 dirhams (130euro) I did have the menu but have misplaced it.

1) Asparagus & white truffle veloute

2) Scallop and crab cake

3) John Dory

4) Fois Gras with espresso reduction (very good)

5) Wagyu fillet

6) sorbet & creme fraiche something

7) Chocolate desert

8) Coffee & petits fours

Wine: NZ Malborough Sauv blanc
Chilean Malbec

The wine list was not as extensive as it could/should have been, and whilst my wine choices were not extravagant they were coming in around 600 dirham/ bottle, which may seem a little steep for a kiwi sauv blanc but I felt I got value for money having paid considerably more for a much inferior wine in Dublin !!

The restaurant will blow you away, though not necessarily because of the food, whilst the food is good (one michelin star standard) it certainly isn't anything wild (a fairly safe menu see above). The view is what you are paying for, although by Dubai standards I felt that the prices were quite reasonable.

We had a superb night, good food, good wine, fantastic company and a staggering view. It was topped off by watching the Russians in the bar dropping the barman a 800 euro tip for serving them with 3 redbulls and vodka after 'last orders'.

I think people should start posting pictures of their last picnic trip out into the country or their last beach trip with the family if they think it is so great.

It's already 35C and 70% humidity and it is only spring.

It's a huge land based ocean liner with shopping mall ( air con'd of course) . Don't make excuses for it.

And there was me thinking this area of the forum related to food & drink.....

Some would say that their idea of a perfect holiday is caravaning in north Wales, they love the freedom of the open road etc etc.....Personally I could think of nothing worse but I simply choose not to go caravaning.

I would never force someone to go to Dubai on holiday, in many respects some of the previous comments are quite true. It has little in the way of history or culture and it does get very hot and humid. However, it has some amazing hotels and restaurants, you can play golf in shorts, customer service is superb and some of my closest friends live there.

Its not for everyone but then neither is a weekend in Bognor !
