Hi

Drawing up a short list of potential next car. I’ve been looking at a Focus ST (225), auto trader says that it will do 41MPG on an extra urban cycle? Anyone an owner who can confirm this? Thanks

Hmm. My mate has one and it struggles to achieve 41mpg with the ignition off! 24-26mpg seems the norm. Oddly enough my 6 MPS which is quite a bit more powerful, more torquey, 4WD and heavier always returns 4-5mpg more than his ST. Must be something to do with being a 5 cylinder.

If my RS and Kuga (with essentially the same engines) are anything to go by, no chance. 30 absolute tops.

Ha ha not a chance unless you go on a very long motorway run and hardly touch the throttle, it maybe achievable as a one off but you wouldn't be able to repeat very often, i get mid to high 20's from mine which is fairly typical of what you should expect.
If you rag it or do alot of sitting in traffic on a daily basis then you need to expect lower 20's or high teens.

Same engine as the T5 Volvos which have been round a long time and nothing with that in it has ever had a realistic 35+ mpg. Unless someone strapped one to a seriously lightweight frame then mpg like that would be seriously unlikely.

Thanks for the replys. Think it may have to be crossed off the list which is a shame especially the way fuel prices are going at the moment

I was looking at a C30 T5 at the beginning of the year and i think people were averaging around 30-34mpg with careful driving with some of the comments i was hearing in reviews.

^^^ Perhaps that says more about the differing driving styles of Volvo and Focus ST drivers wink

I had this same quandry when looking at cars recently.

I really liked the looks of the ST, but as I do 20k miles a year, an ST is a no.

I went for a Zetec S instead, yes you don't have the performance, but it's still a hoot to dirve the 1.6 is keen and it looks the mutts aswell.

I'm averaging 24mpg on my commute (5 miles each way, half of which is 30/40mph villages with the other half NSL) but managed a whopping 33mpg on a recent trip from North Yorkshire to North London at normal cruising speed, which only rose to 34mpg sat at 60mph on the return journey.

This is all going from the trip computer though, so I'm taking them with a pinch of salt.

Oh, and mine has the Mountune 260 package though I don't know how much difference to economy this actually makes.

What sort of budget are you looking at? Persoanlly if I was buying a hot hatch I'd be looking for a Mitsubishi Colt RalliArt. You can get them in 3 or 5 door. New from £12k and 2009 plate used for about £6.5-7k

They run a 1.5 turbo. So lowish tax and pretty good on fuel real world. Best thing is they are light, only just over a tonne, so very chuckable and nippy. Stock they'll do 0-60mph in lowish 7's, which isn't all that far off an ST. And you should be able to remap them to around 210hp giving them a rather good power to weight ratio.

No way...

T5s are not know for their efficiency, and when I test drove a Volvo C30 T5 I was getting 35mpg at 65...

My budget is around 10k, but the lower price the better. Ive never even considered a colt, sounds pretty good from what your saying, i'll have to check it out.

300bhp/ton - that is one hell of a leftfield suggestion! Very impressed!

To the OP. On a motorway the ST isn't that bad, but then again it isn't great. I used to be able to get 28/29mpg out of mine with 80/20 motorway/urban driving.

I believe the mk5 GTI had ok mpg figures. You could also look at one of those.

My daily journey is the same with a 80/20 motorway/urban driving on a 50 mile round trip. I can manage around 37mpg in my current civic driving very carefully. The GTI and EP3 are on the list also. Part of me thinks something more economical would be better but part of me says 'sod it'

No chance! I've been doing a lot of motorway lately and driving very steadily my MPG has risen to 27.5. Never seen it above 27.1 before!

Cheers.

Does the ST need superunleaded? Because pence per mile wise if it does, then it means it's mpg is slightly out compared to a car running 95 RON. Eg pence per mile a car on 95 Ron doing 28mpg, a car trying to cost the same per mile on superunleaded would need to be averaging 30mpg+

Evo seemed to like them: http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evocarreviews/2353...

Biggest thing I like is the weight, or lack of it. With a remap they'll offer up the best part of 200bhp/ton. You'd need 280hp+ in an ST to match that.
