5 jumps to exotica...ideas needed :-)
Discussion
I'm very lucky in that an investment has come off for me and will provide me £10K every quarter for the next year. I haven't really done anything to earn this money save a small investment a while back so I have no reservations about piling it straight into cars.
What I want to do is to buy an initial vehicle with the first instalment then chop it in each windfall. The goal is to reach something exotic (360, AMV8 etc) whilst having fun and losing as little £ possible at each change.
Running costs are not important, although I don't want to be restoring sheds each time. I want to enjoy every vehicle. They don't have to be sprotscars though.
This is what I was thinking:
1) Elise
2)BoxsterS
3)Carrera 4S 996
4)Carrera 2S 997
5)360M
Am I kidding myself that these will not lose me £££ come trade in at each point? I'm happy if by the end of the day I've only got a car that cost £40K, despite having spent £50K. Is this realistic?
P.S. I don't want to save it all for 12 months and I don't want to invest the money.

TBH if you are 100% that you will get this 10k every quarter, I would just get a bank loan and get the "final" car saving myself all the hassle of buying, selling, fixing etc on the way. s
t happens unfortunately and with 4 cars instead of one you have 4 times more chance for that to happen

It's a done deal; my stake is being bought out at this rate.

I fancy experiencing many cars that I will probably never consider buying again. Your idea is of course sensible. I've been sensible for too long...

Kwai,
IMO, that plan is slightly flawed in that:
To get to the target, you'd have to lose only 2k per car. Most dealers want a bigger margin than this, so you'd have to buy privately, or even buy and sell privately - lots of hassle to do this 4 times in a year!
Buy / sell gap aside, most cars will need bits fettling - be that tyres, pads, that squeaky bit, whatever. If you have any form of decent car, that'll cost - no point running an elise on P6000's, and boxster tyres are 850 quid a set - god only knows whats above that! Since most people don't fix these things before they sell, you'll have 4 sets.
For example, I bought a very tidy, low mileage boxster privately.
1st year bills:
tyres 850
front discs / pads, rear pads - bout 250
major service - 850
2nd year bills:
Oil.
3rd year bills:
rear tyres 450
minor service / brake fluid 450
So as you can see, the big bills in year 1 tide you over for a while - you're setting yourself up for 4 "year one's" in 1 year, unless you get a retail car. If you can turn one round for 2k each jump, you;re an awesome salesman / buyer. Unfortunately, I think that will be hard.
Persnally, I'm in with the other posters - get a loan, and skip to the end. The nterest will be less tan 10k, so you win end to end. Plus, you spend all summer in a 360, and you have my respect / jealousy. Just leave enough spare to cover a stage 3 caristo

Absolutely right.

Thanks for the replies so far guys.
I'm pretty dead set on my method. Mainly to experience a variety of vehicles. I'm not wholly comfortable with debt for anything other than growth. As I'm not from the Gordon Brown school of financial prudence, borrowing to buy a car just isn't something I will do.
I don't want to save either.
Maybe I should hang onto the cars for 6 months rather than 3 and double the budget each time and halve Gump's sensible "sorting out" costs. A nice happy medium.

Assume your figures are net of tax. If so I agree it would be more interesting to change every 3 months but guess you would have to buy & sell privately to keep as much of your cash as possible. You might have to travel a lot!
I might go ...
1. VX220
2. Exige
3. Atom
4. M3
5. 911 / V8V
All depends when you start I suppose as you wouldn't want the Atom in December.

In that case Kwai...
1. Elise
2. Superlight R300
3. 996 turbo
4. 360 with capristo
The Elise / Caterham will be the easiest to not lose on IMO, but might need the most DIY spannering. On current plan, you could have the Elise in early summer, Caterham for late summer, and the 4wd turbo for when the roads get greasy / icy. Then, all of next year, you have the dream car.
The poster above's Camero is a good shout, as well. I'm sure for a few months, it'd be awesome. Not sure I could plunge myself (LHD gets tiresome after a while)

An Elise is rather snug. Selling one of those mid-winter might be a chore too. I like the idea of 4WD for winter though. We just need a sensible replacement for the Caty and you've helped muchly.
Maybe an Exige to limit the loss of changing Lotus for Lotus? Does the real world work that way?
