I've been corresponding with a journalist about the correct word for the bit of the seat you lean back on. He wrongly calls this the back rest. Well, strictly speaking that isn't wrong. He insists on calling the bit you sit on the SQUAB.
In actual fact, the bit you sit must be the cushion because the vertical padded part of the seat is the SQUAB.
This is a fact which I have verified by reference to a 1920's coachbuilder's guide. The people making bodywork and upholstery in those days might well have started out working on horse-drawn carriages so they should know!
