i am getting random readings from my oil level measuring display in the dial clusters. sometimes it reads full, sometimes nearly empty and othertimes half full. i just had the car serviced and informed the dealer that this was a problem. still no change though. i've only done 150 odd miles since the service so there should still be plenty of oil in the engine. anyone else experience this problem or know of a cure?

Not heard of this problem. Guessing the sensor is duff or covered in muck?

I think it's time for for a call to the garage again.

I believe it resets itself when you refuel. I would tank her up once before pronouncing it stuffed.

Presume you're checking oil in the prescribed manner - full operating temperature, level surface, idle for 30 seconds before check.....

Dipstick ?

What car is it? If it's a 993/964 you have to measure the oil once the car is at operating temp. After that leave the car to idle for 30 seconds on a level surface. The gauge should settle to indicate the oil level. Also, check with the dipstick at the same time (while the engine is still running).

thanks for the responses. to clarify, i have a 996 c4s. after having driven the car i turn the engine off for 30 seconds / 1 minute and then turn the key back on to do the 40/50 second countdown to oil meausure.

on the most recent occasions (ie after the service - carried out end april) i have not checked the dipstick (but then i've only done about 150 since the service), and to be honest i don't want to spend £65k on a car only to have to check the oil level using the dipstick every time.

any ideas with this extra info? i have put a call into the dealer that serviced my car and they are "currently looking into it". hmm.

My old Boxster S had the same setup as your 996. I used to leave the car for a few minutes before checking the oil level using the digital display. Best thing is to use the display and then the dipstick. If there is any great difference then get it checked by the OPC. The digital display is accurate and should reflect the readout from the dipstick.

If you check the digital display after the car has been standing overnight (before u start the engine first thing) you'll see that the level is much higher than normal due to the time for all the oil to settle.

This is a common problem that was fixed on mine last year an OPC visit should sort it. FYI A 996 has one of the largest oil capacitys of any road car the difference between low and high marks on the read out is only 1 litre so dont panic but as well as the led you should check manualy every week as a matter of course.

Just do a lot of miles in 911's 60K last 3 years the more you use them the more little "features" you learn about. one thing for certain warrentee at £800 after your first 2 years is the best investment you will make especaly on a 996.
However 911 issues pale in to ignificance if you want "features" look on the TVR forum.

My car is in for a service next week 24K got a cyanee from the dealer so I will have a view on that too but dont tell dogsharks

Always wondered why when pulling off after filling up the gauge was lit.
Thought I must have some wierd habit of dawdling away from the pump just to annoy people behind, and that made it come on.

Just so there is no confusion you do NOT put petrol in the oil filler (the question was asked of the oil guage)!!

These symptons on a 964 usually indicate duff sensor.

You big girl`s blouse, you`ll be giving Porsche drivers a bad image !! Next thing you`ll only be using petrol stations that still retain the services of a "little man" to put the ghastly stuff in the car.

Keep smiling. I`m sure if you contact the garage they`ll sort the problem out for you.

Doh, I wondered why I got through so many engines

It does say somewhere in my manual that the oil guage resets itself when you refuel. Seemed strange to me too, but it always stays on for about 60 seconds before returning to displaying the clock.

I may have just dreamt it, I think I'll have to have another read when I get home.

...that's why the manual says (or so I recall) that the correct time to read the oil gauge is once the engine's warm and straight after refuelling.

...now Maurice, there's no need to be rude! He was just asking a question.
