Alfa 156 2.4 jtd as a daily hack?

Anyone have one? are they any good?

I dont really know much about them and if you believe all the internet scare stories no body would have an Alfa!.

Looking at cars upto about £2k (3K max) so earlier models 2000 to 2003. Anything to look out for specifically?

The diesels are the more reliable varient as far as the engines are concerned. It's a fiat engine that is used by a number of manufacturers as they are pretty good engines.

The rest of the car will probably let it down in a way that only an Alfa can though.

My partners cousin had one as a daily commuter for a few months (although I think it was a 1.9 JTD rather than the 2.4. He loved it but due to doing 150 miles a day in it, it gave him some trouble. One being a split boost hose. Not too drastic but left him stranded. Other being a front wheel bearing. Again, not too drastic but was in a garage for a day. Otherwise it was a good car for him. Not sure why he got rid though. Has a Passat TDI now which hasn't been much better.

I loved mine. Had it for 2 years, and until an old chap in an Atoz rammed into it, the only problem I had was the ashtray jamming itself shut every now and then. At 100,000 miles the front suspension bushes were starting to get a bit rattly, so listen out if you're getting one with a few miles on it.

Lovely engine note, 40+ mpg, not too slow. Loads better than the 2.0 147 it was replaced with.

i absolutely loved mine, it was great. however, it had lots of work done on it (was an early 136 bhp model). i bought it at 88k after it'd had an engine rebuild. at 133k the turbo went at the same time as the bottom end again. poor rebuild possibly and a bad coincidence. But, i loved it.
