Jaguar AJ V8 engine

I know this should be in the Engines forum, but I have popped it in there doesn't seem to be much traffic and I was hoping for a few quick responses as the sale is ending soon. Just a quick question.

I have tried a good amount of searching but don't seem to be able to find any figures for the dimensions or mass of the AJ V8 engine. Just that it is compact and light for its power etc.

I am considering buying one for a project and trying to figure out if it is conceivable to transport it in an E36 Touring. I haven't managed to get a tow bar fitted yet so can't use my trailer.

Any information on the engine in any state of dress would be great as a guide.

p.s. Mods feel free to delete this in an hour or so.

They are indeed quite a compact engine, think the physical size is very similar to the Buick/Rover V8. Can't help with the exact weight though.

If you can source a 4.2 version, this may well save you some trouble and strife further down the line.

Thank you. I have heard that they could be similar in size to the Rover V8. Has anyone got any more firm figures?

I would love to get a 4.2, but budget, especially at the moment seems to preclude it. I am in no rush to be at the finished porduct from this engine, if nothing else it will be a great learning exercise in stripping and rebuilding and the engine is currently going very very cheap.

No worries. Just make sure you put in the later models' metal timing chain tensioners instead of the plastic ones it may have. Good engines generally

Get a good one with Nikasil lining. Will be cheaper because of the hysteria. Lighter too I suspect?

The Chevy LS engine is also light and compact for its power and assume you've thought of that - all-alloy - 1997 on in Vettes, Camaros, Trans-Ams etc.

I'm sure I read somewhere that it actually takes up less space than the Rover V8, and is lighter too!

Thanks for the suggestions, wil definitely look into the LS series engines as well.

The Jag engine was mainly because it was going very cheap, though I do like the idea of it being a british engine. Unfortunately I just missed out on it, went so cheaply as well, but didn't manage to win.

Back to searching, the main criterea unfortunately definitely has to be cost, looking for anything light and fairly compact capable of somewhere comfortable north of 200bhp. The Jag engine would have been great at 290bhp and £205 with all ancillaries.
