Some help - if you'd be so kind.
I have not lived in the UK for more than 10 years, with only occasional visits during that time. As a result I'm not all that familiar with routes/traffic anymore.
I'm over for a family celebration in mid-May and need to get from Newport to York with a Friday, mid-morning start.
I'm thinking M4/M5/M6/M62/M1/A1M, rather than south of Birmingham (M42/M69/M1). Is this advisable?
Any thoughts on how long it takes these days < or > 5 hours?

Thanks, in anticipation.

regular run for me is Newport to Leeds

m42 is about 30'mins quicker , more likely also to get bad traffic round Manchester and m62.

estimated time to Leeds is 3 hr 20 on a clear run, upto 5 hour on a bad one .... York is further 40mins

I would suggest A449/M50 - M5 - M42/A42
then
M1 - A64
or
M1 - M18 - A1(M) - A64

I used to travel from Cardiff up to York quite often but have not done for a couple of years.
The 2nd route is a bit shorter but not always quicker!

Definitely do this route, and head up the M18 and A1(M) to avoid the M1 around Leeds.
