Car for work and pleasure?

My V6 4motion Golf is slowly getting a little long in the tooth and while it's still a great car with zero mechanical faults, I'm starting to plan out some money to buy its replacement towards the end of the year - house improvements willing 
I use the car for everything (apart from when I take my partners Anniversary GTI
) which firstly involves a lot more than average miles. In my job I will do around 10,000 miles for work (45p per mile back
) and probably another 7,000 privately and here in lies the problem: If I was to go for an overtly sporty car then it would likely depreciate like a stone with the amount of miles I'd put on it. The second issue is that I'm too much of a petrolhead to get a A4/3 series diesel and sell my soul to the derv devil. I had an 07 STI for 2 years and put 44,000 miles on that and could get around 30mpg on the motorways with work and whatever I wanted to below that when doing my own thing. This was actually rather cheap to run as far as servicing but with tax being upwards of £450 now that would sting a lot especially as I seem to always match the renewal with my insurance coming up during the same period. And then there is spending £78 to fill up a small tank with appropriate fuel. The final point is that I'm not buying new, mainly to get something that's already had below average miles on it so I can put some on it without feeling guilty and also to save myself some mental depreciation.
So, what is my nirvana?

- Drivers car (or close as without being a 7 or a Lotus)
- 200bhp minimum
- Can get 30mpg on the motorway as a minimum
- Reliable
- Low depreciation after buying second hand
- Something I'd be seen dead in (not Mondeo/Vectra)
- NOT a 2 seater
- Ideally 4 doors (unless you can REALLY convince me and the missus)
- Max purchase price of 20k

Anything smaller than a modern golf? or just anything smaller than say a Mk4 golf? VW seemed to get a bit obese in the past few years, especially Polo's... saw the new one the other day and thought it was a golf for a second! :OI'll add that anything smaller than a Golf is out of the question as it'll need to be a lugger for dogs, kids and an amount of crap from B&Q

A GTI wouldn't be a bad option but not with 40k on it. In 3 years it could have 100k on it although there are a lot of MK5s out there with a lot less. The MK6 is also creeping into shot although the once I tried had that god awful DSG box and made the car utterly unusable in the wet, especially off roundabouts. Not sure about the 30+ MPG on the motorway though, guess it shouldn't be too bad
You could do worse than a Passat B6 estate, not hugely fast but quite nippy I personally would recomend the 2.0tdi. the boot is quite big with the seats still up but when they are down... acres of space for lugging stuff for home improvememts

To OP, what about an Alpina D3, there's a few floating around the classifieds that would fit the bill nicely.
At the risk of getting beaten up, I would suggest an 05 Impreza WRX PPP. I did 45K over 2 years at 36ppm and it was fine and FUN
