Just spent 130 quid on some zymol polish and was just wondering before i completely ruin my car by applying fairy liquid to the sponge (and waisting the money on the polish) what sort of 'car' shampoos are people using...??

Any good recommendations.....??

In case you are not joking...

DO NOT use fairy liquid on your car.
It will strip the wax, and it contains salt.
Double whammy.

Use Zymol or Swissol carwash - this will not strip the wax, and works well.
Other good brands Mothers, P21S.

Don't use a wash 'n wax type of product.

I use the zymol shampoo that is available in Halfords, its good stuff and not bank breaking either.Lasts ageas as you use very little.
You arent supposed to wash the roof too much either remember as it strips the goodness out of it.
If the water doesnt bead use fabsil, scotchguard etc.

I hope you also bought the HD Cleanse, as without thoroughly cleaning the paintwork first the Zymol polish will not bond, and will only last to the first heavy rain shower/wash.

Zymol Car Was from Halfords is £7.99 a bottle and last 12 months plus, even washing once a week - use half(or less) than it says on the bottle.

The HD clense I'm guessing that this needs to be applied after the car has been washed and before the feeding stage.....??

Correct

Check out www.zymol.com for more info

I HD Cleanse once a year, wash every week, wax at least once a month (Concours wax in winter, Vintage in Summer )

Which are the right waxes to go for?

I have bought cars in the past for less than the price of some of them!

I use autoglym at the mo, which isn't bad, but if I can get waxing down to a once or twice a year thing, so much the better.

Is it really worth the extra money?

Autoglym is a petrol based polish. Therefore this will remove some of the top surface of the car.

Using Zymol, or Swissol, or P21 etc, will help feed the paint, without removing any of the top layer.

I did not beleive, but am trully converted (praise the zymol ) as its results speak for itself.

Hi Catsflap and Elliot,

On your recommendations, I'm just off out to buy some Zymol. Watch this space.

The halfords one, i cannot comment on. The under the counter expensive one, is excellent. Though i am now using Wax Wizards wheels cleaner MC2 and his Active F wash shampoo, as they are made by him, very reasonable, and smell so good, tempted to add vodka and ice

So what's the consensus of products on giving a Zenith Blue one a proper Zymoling then?

If your used to Autoglym then the Carbon Starter Kit (around £75) will provide shampoo for 6 months at least, HD cleanse for two paint cleaning sessions and about 22 coats of wax, not to mention the applicator pads and buffing towels. Then use the Zymol car wash from Halfords (£7 a bottle)

The more you pay for wax the higher the carnauba content, and the better the shine. Once you get above Titanium wax though you have to melt the wax in your hand first and then smear it over the paintwork (strange looks from the neighbours!)

You can apply as many coats of wax as you like after HD Cleansing, each application adding to the previous coat.

For those who cannot justify the price of Vintage, buy the sampler kit, which has decent sized pots Vintage, Atlantique and Destiny wax for £200. I've had mine three years so far, wax at least 12 times a year and still have 70% left)

For examples of the results see the just waxed or competition sections on www.zdouk.com

I have some very minor damage to the rear that I was thinking about putting through the paint shop. If I Zymol, will it seriously mess up their chances of doing a good job?

no as they will have to rough up the original service so the new coat of paint adheres to it.

its described as 'paintable', ie bodyshops can handle the waxed bodywork without any added complications as Helen says
