PH challenge, what convertible for £1k

First some background:

I've always wanted a convertible, granted I actually did own one albiet briefly, a fox body Mustang but as I only had it for about a month it doesn't really count....

And as we can only run one car a convertible has never really been practical, but soon I wont be able to have a convertible due to wanting a start a family in the next couple of years.

The clock is ticking so to speak.

I'm hoping to sell the Saab (cheap plug) for a smidge over £3k and want to put most of that into savings, leaving me with about £1000 sovereigns to play with.

I would prefer a manual (as it will be a change from the Saab), I naturally dont want to spend every week in the garage getting something fixed, but I am not adverse to bringing out the tool kit.

So all powerful hive mind, what do you suggest?

there are that many that anything that goes wrong can be fixed or replaced quite cheaply.

Also there are a lot of high mileage ones, I assume that's nothing to worry about (buy on condition etc)

Depends what you hit I guess... I suspect it's roughly the same as the MGF you found in terms of crash safety. At £1000 there isn't going to be a particularly safe convertible, although I suspect an old Saab 900 drop top would be about the safest
