Maybe a Hayabusa? Assuming that you're not allowing racing car engines.

My S2000 (or any to be fair as mine is standard).

With an aftermarket cold air feed the intake noise adds alot to the sound as well.

Also, a Mk2 Golf 8v on carbs.

ETA: Old scooby with the uneven headers...

A bit like asking; "What's the best sounding washing mashine/sewing machine?"
wink

Anyways...

Flat Four Subaru/Alfa

Ford Pinto a la RS Mexico/ RS200 etc

Maybe some kind of V-TEC or even a K-series?

F20C - S2000. Most 4 cylinders sound gash.

yes

or Mini 1380 with twin Weber 40 DCOE carburettors makes a nice sucking sound and 'scaffold' pipe exhaust and that distinct whine of a straight cut gearbox.
Here is an example 'deathtrap'. Mine sounded just like this.

Slightly off topic but I had a random bloke wander up to me when I was filling up and claim the S2000 sounded like a small V8 ?? I just agreed as he must have been mental!

Has to be Subaru I'm afraid. inline fours all just sound a bit 'meh' unless they are in motorcycles.

I can't stand the noise made by boxer fours. I think they sound absolutely terrible.
