Would anyone be able to recommend a garage in London/sw London/Surrey area that would MOT a lotus S1 which has been decatted? It seems a shame to go to the effort of putting a cat back on for an MOT! Thanks in advance...

So you want a garage that'll not bother following the MOT rules?

You'll be lucky if you get a garage to not play buy the rules, they'll lose the right to MOT.

And if anyone does know of such a garage, it's quite unlikely they'll post up about it on a public forum!

I think you are right, it could be put through a test, but I'm told would almost certainly be throwing out too much CO2. I'm told that putting the cat back on..is a 30 min job...the engine needs to adjust to it/ECU, etc. Just such a hassle! Oh well

Is it not the case that if you show up without one fitted, it will still be tested as if it has one, but if your engines running sweetly enough, it'll still pass?
I have heard that sticking wire wool up the exhaust get you through the emissions test when decatted? winkbiggrin

Absolutely - an MOT tester who is prepared to overlook certain non-safety related items is a useful thing and not something I'd tell anyone about.

Probably, I doubt it'll pass the CO limit without one.

OP there are a few places where you're likely to find a 'sympathetic' MOT tester but you wont get anyone telling you on a public forum

Do you really need a decat? I didn't notice any improvements when I had one in my 111S

A cat is not necessary if it passes the emissions without one. No-one will pass it if it doesn't.

I once put my 340R, sans cat, through an MOT test to see what would happen. It obviously failed but it wasn't the C02 output that crippled it. They don't measure just the C02 output, you know.

I agree. Can't see the point in a decat. Even more so on lower hp vehicles. Most stock cats are likely to flow enough not too affect back pressure too much, so their only influence is their effect on the exhaust pressure wave. But unless it's a race engine gunning for max hp it's not likely a problem on most road cars.

As I understand it, decat'ing a 111S (Rover VVC) will leave you with a nice drop in power.

Not enough to notice! Anyway, a good exhaust coupled with a decat pipe sounds fantastic on a 111S smile However I understand that it really does depend on the exhaust you have and your personal tolerances. The burble from the Hayward & Scott system on my 111S has received lots of positive comments from local SELOCers. Although on the other hand, the Janspeed on my previous S1 was high-pitched and ear-achingly painful, even over the shortest of journeys.

  • Without a cat it will emit less CO2 from the exhaust*.
Any MOT station will test it and providing that the CO, HC and lambda are within the specified limits it won't fail on emissions. Next year it will fail for not having a cat regardless of the emissions reult.

  • Only our goverment could legislate having cats ostensibly for environmental reasons and then tax you on the extra CO2 emitted that is produced by the chemical reactions within the cat.

No, it sounds like a rattly old 4-banger being broadcast over a PA system. No different to chavs who stick noisy exhausts on their pooheaps. See the light: silence is golden.

Perhaps, but the majority of Elises have been fitted with a sports exhaust of some description. The standard unit may be quiet, but it is hugely underwhelming and ruins the experience of driving an impractical sports car. A decat is just a cheap, easy to fit/remove pipe that adds a bit extra smile Imho, a decat can sound awful on the wrong exhaust system, but it can also sound fantastic with the right system.

The Elise looks purposeful and to many, it needs a throaty soundtrack to compliment the styling. A chav sticking an exhaust on a euro-box shopping cart is completely different.

Silence is golden? Maybe if you aspire to owning an electric car. The difference between chavs putting bean can exhausts on their 1.2L Corsas and the man with a sports exhaust on his Elise is that the Chav wants everyone in their estate to look at their car, whereas the man with the Lotus just wants his car to sound nice.

A good exhaust can do so, so much to improve a car. Why would you want the noise silenced? Noise is glorious!

I was waiting for the punchline. You might think it's music to your ears but to everyone else it's just noise and not even a particularly nice noise.
