Bought a car, Insurance and Tax

Mods - Hoping this is best placed in here.

I have bought a new car from a private seller, it does currently have MOT until the end of June and there is no tax at the moment.

Just making sure I do everything in the right order and PH knows everything, right?

Order of events.

I need to insure the car, I have the opportunity of 7 days drive-away from Aviva that came with the HPI check.
I have Admiral on standby with the car quoted on our Multicar policy for me to pay when the time comes.

Now, do I next fill out the new keeper supplement and can tax the car for 12 months with that? (have to be done in a post office on the day)
or
Get the current owner to tax the car and then send off the new owner supplement to DVLA.

With the new laws stating that cars must be insured to be taxed, is it okay to tax it with the 7 Day Aviva, or do I need insurance for the full period (this may also be difficult as the Multicar finishes at the end of October)

This would hopefully leave me with a tax disc in hand, 7 days insurance and legal to drive away?

Think that covers everything, feel free to add anything I have missed.

I might be wrong but can you not tax it with the green slip that you get whilest you're waiting for the logbook to arrive?

So that is the new keeper supplement? It's what I thought, so that's good.

Any reason that can't be done with the Aviva 7 day insurance?

Dont you need an insurance certificate to get tax? I just bought a car with no tax on but from a dealer, I was able to take the dealers trade insurance certificate to the post office and get it taxed with that.

Forgot to say that the Aviva 7 Day insurance, they e-mail a cover note to print off. That would suffice?

You need the new owner slip, proof of insurance and if my memory serves me correctly a MOT certificate?

The cover note from Aviva should surfice. When I've shown my cover letter in the past they seem to just check my name and the car reg to make sure it matches up, they don't really check the insurance in detail.

Not sure about the MOT certificate, I take mine but I take every piece of paper I can to make sure I havent forgot anything

Ah, the MOT certificate would also be useful. Forgot that one.

Tax using the green slip, the MOT and the 7 day cover note, that will be absolutely fine and perfectly legal.

I did this when from I bought my missus's car from London and then drove it home to Cornwall..

Just be aware that not all post offices (especially small local branches it seems) will accept an emailed and home printed cover note. If you have problems then same docs to either a main PO or you local DVLA office.

You are able to take a printed/photocopied insurance certificate. The law changed 30/04/2010 to allow you to do this

Have called the 2nd nearest post office, they will accept a printed note, as long as dates match up, along with new keeper supplement and MOT.

Post office website lied about which do car tax though. Bastids.

I am assuming it is ILLEGAL to drive to the nearest post office < 3 miles, with mot and insurance to get the tax disc?

Technically although the chances of getting caught are close to zero. Even if you drive through a VOSA camera the database will have been updated as taxed by the time they marry it all up.
