worth buying a scrap vw golf and breaking for spares

a mate at work is selling a 2002 vw golf gt tdi 150 for about 300. headgasket blown causing major damage to engine. Hes cutting his losses as cant afford the 1700 repair bill

is it worth buying and selling for spares?

Alternatively buy it, get a replacement 2nd hand engine for cheap and then flip it on eBay.

that'd be my plan. or find an engine and run it as a work bus

why sell it on cheap or use as a work bus, what condition is the car otherwise. Just because its cheap to by doesnt mean it wont be worth much if you fix her up.

If you have the time, space and spanners - yes!

£300 is a steal for a non running Golf MKIV, particularly a high spec GT TDI model. You would easily make a profit on that breaking up the parts, or repairing it and returning to the road with a recon engine.

buy it and fix it, give it a couple of weeks to find a good engine from a breaker, fit it with new cambelt, oil/filter etc and sell it.

The problem with any plans to fix and put back on the road is that VW didn't sell huge numbers of the 150bhp MkIV diesels, so a replacement lump may be tricky to find.

I suspect a 130bhp lump will be easier to find and drop straight in.

If it's just the head that's gone (sure that's what OP said) can a 130 not be furnished with turbo, ecu etc from original car to create 150?

as the block is usually the same is it not?

Does the GT TDI 150 come with the Recaro interior?

Worth stripping that out and reselling it?
