OK! We've got the obligatory BMW 325, now we need to know the rules and regs. Our car has got an MOT till august, but it'll likely be that long before we're ready to go anywhere. We want to strip and it's unlikely to be road legal. Trailering it to a track isn't a problem, but does a car need a MOT to be allowed to participate.

We'd also like advice on insurance. What recommendations can you give. We don't want a big bill for a few lengths of Armco (which we're obviously NOT going to crash into!)

Depends on the TDO. Some (including BookaTrack) insist that cars are MOT'd (but not necessarily taxed or insured for road used). Others do not.

Not the ones I have been on, its just needs to be safe really.. I would suggest a airfield day or 2 to start off with, loads od run off space, and nothing to hit.. And its flat, so you can get used to the handing in 2ish dimensions before adding up/down too.

Mine not taxed etc, they just look for any bits hanging off, or more importantly oil not dripping out of car to make others crash..

Motorsport events are a good start, its 100 quid ish, so even useful as a first shakedown really, where you will find problems. (like I did - water pump blew up).

Do you actually request the participant produces a valid MOT certificate for you to see then?

And how does the whole MOT thing work with race cars?

Even scruitineering really. Our car hasn't raced since 2009, thus hasn't gone through any form of scruitineering since then. It is perfectly safe, mind, but it's had work done to it since it last raced (saying that, the front bumper was being held on by one screw not so long ago and we didn't realise until we'd done at least a couple of track days...).

If it's trailered to the track, doesn't have a current tax-disc and looks like a f**kin shed, yes.

Don't your own Caterhams miss indicator and stop lights ?
