The NBA season is on during Jan so recommend watching the Knicks at Madison Square Gardens. My missus and I went last year and although she hates sport she loved watching the basketball.

Also suggest going up to the crown at the Statue of Liberty. You'll need to book this though as they only allow so many people up a day.

Weather can be snot-freezingly cold in Jan, so plan accordingly.
It's crap, even today. I'm at La Guardia right now waiting to GTF out, back to the sunshine.
You might want to indicate a budget, re where to stay. Manhattan varies from $200 to several thousand per night.

Fook that off.

Nearly kill yourself walking up hundreds of stairs for a few minutes in a crampt tiny space where you get a worse view of Manhatten than you do on the boat over there?

Must do: Go to the 'top of the Rock'. Top deck of the Rockefeller building, best views of Central Park and the Empire State.

If you are going to the Abercrombie store, as most tourists do, then forget the one near Central Park. Get down to Pier 17 and there're no queues, just walk straight in. Nice place to visit too and handy for walking over teh Brooklyn Bridge.

Me and my missus done a helicopter tour at sunset, very highley recommended. Forget what the name of the operator was, but its on the west side somewhere around 35-50th street i think. Cost around $250-$400 i think depending on where you go and how long for, but well worth it.

Also as said, no point going up the statue of liberty, waste of time and effort for very little reward, take your camera in the copter...

Top of the Rock is well worth doing, but probably only if the weather is reasonable.

Top of the Rock is excellent - Best view of Central Park (Rochefeller centre blocks the view of CP from the ESB. Also much cheaper than ESB (c$20 vs c£70 when I took my daughter last August). As said before check the weather as top often covered with cloud though we did go up last year in the cloud "we're English" seemed to do it for the ticket seller - It cleared-up whilst we were up there.

Go to Ground Zero - Always worth a visit then go look at the Federal Reserve, Wall Street and walk to Pier 17 (mentioned earlier) for lunch. Then upto (and across if you had a big lunch) Brooklyn Bridge. Shop for cheap clothes early evening in Canal Street and Broadway and then dinner in China Town followed by Dessert in Little Italy (other side of Canal St to China Town).

5th avenue is always a giggle (keep wallet firmly locked away), and walk through CP (maybe even a romantic trip on a horse-drawn cart). There is then FAO Schwarz (NYC's answer to Hamleys) and NIKE town and Bloomingdales all within a few blocks).

Plenty of places to eat - Try Smith & Wollensky's, Sparks (John Gotti assassinated a rival on the doorstep) or Palm/Palm Too for the best streak experience (and most monumental wine lists).

Anything else, PM - Worked there for a good while back in '98 and have returned almost anually.....

Ahhh, mention of Smith & Wollensky's...fab food and experience, rather pricey though!

If you're into culture, IMHO the best place by far is the Frick Museum and do take the audio guide too!

I know, soon as I wrote my piece I was on the S&W website - I stayed in the Marriot on Lex a few times, just a block away from S&W which we tried to do as often as possible (expenses )woohoo

Art orgy!

MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) - very very good.

Guggenheim - very good

The Met - very worthwhile

Frick Collection - my favourite of the four.

I don't think I've ever felt so safe in a big city as I do when I'm in New York.

Make sure you go on a ride on the Staten Island Ferry, you get a good view of downtown and the Statue of Liberty.

There's an excellent Chinese takeaway on Broadway somewhere around 108th street, does huge portions for a very reasonable price.

I went out to Coney Island in January, it's quite "bracing", but well worth a walk along the boardwalk and a look at the deserted fairground.

Even the crazy people were pleasant. There was one outside my (VERY uptown) hostel that would sing a little song. He was awesome.

I'll second (third?) that; on our first visit a few years ago, we came out an R&B club (The Groove) in Greenwich Village at 04.00 one morning (the only white people in there) and were approached by a mahoosive black guy. He grabbed hold of my missus and I and, just as I was geting ready to soil myself, he started singing to us. He was that good we gave him a couple of dollars for his trouble.

God, I fking love NYC. Got to go back again.

+1

The chopper ride is bloody awesome, I did it for my 21st with the family and it was brillant and the views are far better! And since they all take off nearby (and after all you are a PHer) visit the aircraft museum just up the street that's based on the aircraft carrier (I want to say Intrepid?), its awesome too! They've got a submarine, a Concorde, an SR71 and I believe there's a shuttle heading their way too. If you do want to climb a tall building you might as well do the Empire State instead, easier to get to and better views.

Oh and yes, in January, it will be absolutely FREEZING so pack accordingly.
