If you go pre-1972 you avoid the cars that rust the worst (Soviet steel was used in the 70s) but that means you don't get the V6. They will still rust just like any car of that age though (which is all of them).
The 105 series (Giulias) are the sweet spot in my opinion, for being great fun to drive but also modern enough to live with. Coupes, saloon and spider form. Websites like alfaholics.com and classicalfa.com have picture galleries and cars for sale that you can get an idea from.

Check out the 166 3.0 V6 Super. Big 4 door saloon, but with the proper Alfa V6 (as opposed to the not quite so proper 3.2 V6

Can pick a good early one up for 1500 quid, and a cracker for about 2K. Lots of comfort and relaxed motorway work and that glorious noise just a flex of the foot away. Go for manual rather than auto (as perversely its the german bits in the gearbox and electronics make it more prone to being unreliable).

Errrrrm. Where do you think the 3.2 came from? )It's the same Busso design that was in production right up to the horrible GM based ones.
Just the 3.0l is a tad smaller capacity. (and somewhat de-tuned compared to the GTA versions)

Busso V6 came in 3.2 guise as well as the GM 3.2
Personally I'd check out a GTV, but i'm biased
Marky, the 3.2 in the 166 only came in the 'facelift' version (along with the 'facelift 916 GTVs and 916 Spiders) and GTs

difference powerwise between the 3.0l and 'normal' (ie non GTA) 3.2s isn't a lot really so no need to lose sleep!
Besides, a 3.2 166 would be nowhere NEAR what you paid for your fine example!!!!!

I would reccomend one of thesee. I own one and love it (altough mine is the 2.0 TS) it is honestly great fun to drive to my annoyance as its one of the cheapest cars I have ever owned. Oh and it has never let me down. Go for the widebody too

(widebody V6 155s are just a tad more rare than the 2.0l ones though)
