My wife and I did this last year and it was excellent. We started in New York before heading up into New England staying at Salem, then up into the white mountains, across to Bar Harbour, then Portland and finishing in Boston.

We got a train from NY to Boston where we picked up a car for the New England leg which worked out cheaper than paying the surcharge for a different drop off location with the hire company. The train journey was pretty cool anyway, nice scenery.

Of all the places we visited, Bar Harbour was my favourite, a really friendly place and some great scenery in the Acadia national park. We stayed here: http://www.aysgarth.com/ and I can highly reccomend it, great breakfast and very friendly owners.

We went at the beginning of October and the fall was just starting to kick in, still a few green leaves around, but it was still stunning. I've got a few photos here if you're interested: http://www.flickr.com/photos/paul_phillpot/sets/72...

Best thing about New England? Lobster, lots of lobster!

Oh and if you're thinking of hiring a convertible, the current Sebring has a daft roof arrangement which means it's got bugger all boot space with the roof down (the old one could still fit a large suitcase and a bunch of smaller bags).

Hope that helps!

Wife and I did this.

We went mid October 2007. Flew to Boston then to Augusta, Maine, where we hired a car and stayed for several nights so we could go "leaf peeping" in mid and north Maine. We then went to Portland, Maine, and stayed there for several more nights taking in more leaf peeping etc as well as some of the great places nearby that we had visited years before. We then retuned the car and flew back to Boston. All in all a great and spectacular trip. The reason we stayed in two places is because the Fall works its way south, so we started north then based ourselves south so as to get the best opportunity to take it all in, worked well.

There's plenty of websites that give information about the best times to go depending on where precisely you plan to be...the further north the earlier you should be there, and vice versa.

If you need more precision, let me know. and I'll get the stuff up here.

Here's a taster (reduced definition so I could upload it):

If you go to Bar Harbor try and get to "Acadia Air Tours" - Big Yellow 2 seater bi-plane which does a tour of Acadia, and the lighthouses of Bar Harbor. We did it when we stopped in Bar Harbor on the QM2...it was absolutely brilliant.

Another +1 for Bar Harbour and the Arcadia National Park. We came from Ontario however but saw Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and the top of the New York state through to Niagra. Interesting holiday yes

The first 3 states I mentioned stand out to me more than the others. Look for a great little village called Stowe, a Ski Resort in the winter, but enjoyable in the fall with enough to do, but is nice and quiet. A real American Village feel to it. We stayed at a place called the Green Mountain Inn. Lovely area smile
