Hello, i'm looking for some general points & advice on what to look out for on a 147 with the 1.9 JTDm 16v 150bhp engine thats covered 150k miles. I've been offered it very cheaply - as you can imagine with the miles -but i've not seen it yet.

It's a one owner, 2005 05, so i suppose equates to around 25k miles a year been put on it. It does have a full history with it too. (what should i be looking out for?)

Do you think i should go for it, or leave it and find a lower mileage version? Don't know if it would be false economy buying cheap and then having to fork out later, plus would you say there was much life left in it? (overall car seems fairly tight i'm told!)

Any advice appreciated. Cheers

The Alfa Diesel engine is very good, assuming its been maintained correctly and all service items done to schedule, just like any other car tbh. If its a one owner, well looked after example then I wouldn't be too phased if the price is right. You could probably do another 100K no problem.

However, the concern would be ancillary items that need to be changed. Afterall these will wear out long before the engine will. New clutch could be required if still the original - few hundred quid. Brakes, no big issue as you can get a full set from buypartsby.co.uk for £80 landed.

Basic checklist

- Suspension Arms / Bushes / Other Suspension Items
- Hand Brake Cables
- Clutch
- Check Sump Pan, as prone to damage (used one is best option)
- CATS, some models have upto x3 (centre and downpipe) and if you got a F***ed Exhaust then £££££'s

If you got the car for a Grand and you spent another £500 to bring it up to spec, then cheap car if its got nice bodywork and interior.

IMO - if the car looks and feels tired then jog on. Plenty of Alfa's out there. Good Luck smile

PJ pretty much has it there smile

I'd be looking at how frequently it's been serviced. Regular oil changes is key here.

And as he says - if all that he says is OK, and the car is a few hundred quid, and you spend another few hundred getting it into tip top shape - then I'd jump at it without any hesitation smile

Yes, 150k miles not a problem with a diesel as long as it's been serviced well. My mate has a Peugeot 406 HDi with 238k miles and still runs nice and smooth although he does change the oil regularly.

My 2.4 has got 200k on the clock. A bit raspy and reedy perhaps, but still fine.
