Right, not sure if this is in the right place to start with so mod's feel free to move as you wish. Just phoned my insurance company (Flux Direct) making an enquirey about declaring alloy wheels on my car. (Standard peugeot alloys instead of the crappy hub caps). Just been offered a set at a decent price and have fairly new tyres all around. Works out cheaper to buy them instead of just replacing the tyres on mine now which are getting lowish. However flux came back to me and said to add this to my policy it will cost £48 £45 of which is admin fee's. How can they charge so much for some monkey on the other end clicking about 5 buttons?

Any suggestions chaps? Otheriwse it's just wait until my renewal in june.

I was under the impression that fitting a cage increases your premium by a massive amount. confused

A black grill instead of chrome? I would never have bothered ringing them. One of those things 90% of the population wouldn't be able to identify as a mod.

Premium up by £25.36 this very evening for me because I wouldn't buy an extortionate exhaust from Renault and bought one from elsewhere (which happens to come with a lifetime guarantee!)

So was I.

Also Footman James did not charge my mate extra for a cage and stripping his MK2 Escort.

Funny how different companies work ....... I went through it twice with different customer service personel to make sure and I have it on the insurance certificate under "Major interior changes and Minor interior changes"

I agree can seem lot of money for some modifications.

But hey even if not performace enhancing the car is either more statisically likely to be vandalised or more desirable and therefore stolen. Even if not for these reasons but if say you turn a bog standard car into a "GTi replica" or similar then my guess is that will be driven harder. Therefore, more likely to have and accident.

Oh and failing the above if you disagree. Probably and more importantly remember that insurers and brokers are a business consequently there want to make money !!

Oh that and you don't have a choice.

Been there, the premium on my Fiat Coupe 20VT went up by £50 when I replaced the hopeless OE exhaust with a SS one with a 25yr warranty. Didn't inform them when I bought the second 20VT!

I wouldn't have said there are firm rules like that when it comes to insurers and mods.

Limit on torque ?
power to weight ratio ?

Heard of a policy that works on your driving no claims and the power to weight ratio of the car compared to the drivetrain layout i.e 4wd or Rwd, FWD. I think it was a kit car insurance company.

I can't see as having peugeot alloys on a peugeot is any problem and I wouldn't have bothered telling them.

Lets say you were someone with no car interest/knowledge who bought the 206 with the peugeot alloys already on it, they wouldn't have any clue they were non-standard and so wouldn't be able to tell the insurers. There's no way the insurers could quibble about this in the event of a claim as it's impossible to know, especially as there is a chance the first owner specced alloys as an extra. Agree with telling insurers about bodykits/engine mods etc, but minor things like this - don't give them an excuse for exercising their 'admin charge' small print. Heaven forfend they should actually do some work for the premium you pay...
