Well, it had to happen, the Megane had to go, it was costing too much to keep it working and it still only left doubt in my mind as to whether or not it'd start when I needed to get home or what faults were about to uncover themselves from a list of many with early model Mk2s. MOT was due, sure to fail on something and it was asking for an oil change and service too... Initially I'd jumped to look at Fiat Panda 100HPs, but I couldn't find one quite new enough and with a warranty and I could never make my mind up as to whether or not I could live with the ride, but one this I knew from the first time I sat in one was that it was probably going to be a bit small and the pedal box was very tight.... So then I went to look at last-gen (05-09?) Ford Fiesta Zetec Climate 1.4s, but I've never been much a fan of the interiors, having learned to drive in one I knew there was nowhere for my left foot, which annoyed me, and I just can't seem to stop myself from focusing on the heating elements for the front screen! Next up came the VW Polo, I'd found a nice 2008 '08' Match 3dr 1.4 in grey at our local dealer for £7,500 with 38,000mi on the clock and 12months warranty and we were pleased with the £1,000 px offer on the Megane, but all the while my Dad was suggesting Peugeot 207s... We had a late 1990 205 Style 1.1 3dr for 11yrs as a runabout, it's only problem was a starter motor packing up and needing 3 re-sprays after I 'washed' it with sand paper I'd found under a neighbors car aged 3. My Grandparents have a rough-and-tumble, battlescsarred LHD MY03 Partner Combi in France as their runabout which has been trouble free despite the abuse and having swallowed some 'Gazole'. Mum's MY08 308 has been great too...
After much deliberation and scouring of the VW and Peugoet used car locators we went to view a grey 2009 '58' 207 Sport 1.4VTi 95 3dr with 17,500mi on the clock at our local dealer and it was decided that whilst the VW was better built (the Peugeots are by no means bad!) the 207 was almost a year newer, still a current model had 20,000mi less on it, cheaper to insure, tax, quicker, more economical, funkier to look at and cheaper to insure... It was listed at £500 less than the Polo, came with 12months manufacturers warranty and I'd been offered £1,300 for the Megane. A deal was done having knocked the price down by a couple of hundred squids, branded carpet mats and a years RFL added, we left a deposit and were told to come back Tuesday afternoon to pay the rest and pick it up.
So there we go! The Megane goes 2 days before it's MOT expires, 6 days before it's 2yr anniversary with me, I get the remainder of my RFL back, about £40 and now I've a shiny 'new' 207 to replace it. 1yr Manufacturers Warrant, Branded Carpet Mats, 1/4 tank of petrol, freshly valeted, it's first MOT when it's due next year, it's jut been serviced and I've got a 10% off voucher for Peugeot Accessories and so I'm going back in a week or so to have an AUX-In fitted in the glovebox, which is cooled so my iPod doesn't get all sweaty on a warm summers day...

Anyway, enough of the boring stuff... First impressions are great. I've had it a day now, done just over 100mi, most of which just aimlessly driving around getting used to it... It's so much nicer than the Megane, no rattles, no squeakes, no driveline shunt, no clutch judder no horribly jarring on speed bumps or potholes! To look at, I think it's great, like a shark in this grey, it's a pleasure to walk up to it on the high street. I'm not much of a fan of the facelifted front end, I prefer the front of mine although the new LED rear light clusters look very smart and the new, slightly altered Air Conditioning/Ventilation controls are quite nice too...
Cabin is nice, made of quality feeling materials, the sports seats are comfy and supportive, the steering wheel is really nice to hold the dials are clear and the dash looks really smart. Like the 308 it's all perforated rubbery stuff, soft to the touch, with some real metal bits to brighten it a bit, the lower parts look a little cheaper as do some of the plastics on the doors, and you have to reach miles to get the interior door handles! The steering is nice, but a little numb, though the variable assistance works really, really well. The pedals look a bit close together but in practice their fine, nice and light in action. The gearbox on the other hand lets it down. I think it's better than in the 308, but feels lighter, it doesn't feel sturdy enough and isn't particularly accurate, seems to feel better when on the move though...
The engine feels great, shares the unit with the MINI One, I love it. It's down 5bhp on the Megane but provides a bit more torque, don't quote me on that, but it's eager to rev, very responsive and sounds really great, raspy and zingy, I love passing 2/2,500rpm under load... Anyone with a MINI One/MINI Cooper will probably know what I'm on about. It pulls nicely and feels quicker than it's 12sec 0-60 time might suggest. It seems alot pokier then the Megane which was supposedly only 1/2 a second slower, makes me think the Megane was sicker than I thought and down on power a bit... Compared to the Megane, which was very heavy and dulled, lethargic and unresponsive, this feels light, nimble and nippy and responsive. Just soooo much better in every way... Economy wise it's impressing me too, the Megane would manage mid to late 20smpg around town, 33mpg on a run and 38mpg on a 100mi, 70mph motorway cruise, the best I got being 42mpg... This however has been doing an average of 20mph and returning me 42mpg, it's been given a bootfull a few times and a lot of my aimless driving has been in and around towns...
So. Hopefully this will serve me as the 205, Partner and 308 have done, anything's better than the Megane. Looking forward to my time with it!

Thanks, I am, no worries, I have an actual key to turn, no more stupid button... Everything is sealed as it should, I can move the front seat without setting off the airbag fault light, I can come off and get on the throttle without the driveline shunt, the handbrake actually holds the car on a hill. Wipers aren't auto anymore and so shouldn't stop right as the rainfall becomes a tsumani on the motorway behind an artic! Ahh! So bleedin' chuffed! Sounds like you're enjoying being out of the megane!
Nice choice, was wondering what you ended up with. I'd say thats a better buy than the Polo given its still a current car not released all that long ago, whereas the VW dates back to 2002.
Regarding the AUX, we had an 08 207 HDi rental last year and it had RCA inputs in the glovebox. This was a lower spec model so I'd have thought yours should have that too.

Mix of parents wanting a low insurance/still in warranty/low mileage/relatively cheap car, should have read all the arguements Tom had with his parents until this was finally settled on.. Which I think was probably the best of the bunch suggested.How much did you pay? Or is that being rude?

Parents provided the funding, I'm taking over the running costs from next year as I come out of Uni. Basically wanted something fairly new so I could have peace of mind, I don't have to worry about MOT for a year, even then it's free and if it fails on anything I've got cover from the dealer for up to £750 for it. Service intervals are 2yrs/20,000mi too. After the Megane which in total had 2 cambelts, 2 tyres, 4 brake pads, 4 brake discs, a body control module, an underseat wiring loom, light bulbs, a new glovebox lid, a foglight surround, new wiper arms, a new key card and gearstick, cv gaitor and was in need of another £1150 spent on it. Just wanted something I didn;t have to worry about and won't need anything replacing for a while.How much did you pay? Or is that being rude?

Thank you. Yeah, feels and looks much more modern than the Polo, I'd have quite liked what you've got, but they've not depreciated as much as I needed yet. These seem to fall a bit harder in the 1st year or two and then level out... Some seem to have them, some don't, there's a blanking panel in all. And tyres, brakes and light bulbs are consumables that will eventually fail on any car.
Enjoy it anyway, it is certainly more handsom than the Renault.

They do yes, but the majority of it is unfounded. The VTi engine is a cracking little thing - they're eager to rev, enthusiastic, pull nicely for their output, and make a satisfyingly crisp and modern sound. The interiors are well made, using decent materials and being more than stylish enough without being an ergonomic nightmare. Insurance is reasonable, they're good looking (ok, that's subjective) and they're decent enough to chuck around. The steering is a little lifeless, admittedly, but you can have a good time in one.Tom, I hope you enjoy the car, it looks like a minter.
