Gasket, which way round?

I have just received a new EGR valve pipe and metal gasket, and am replacing them myself, but have hit a snag: which way round does the gasket that sits between the pipe and the exhaust manifold go?

One side of the metal gasket has an engraved triangle and the numbers "196". Do the engravings face the manifold or the end of the pipe?

The only reason I ask is because the gasket is shaped differently on both sides.

Have you took the old egr valve off yet?

just check and see what way the old one is and replace the new one the same way?

Might not be to helpful but thats what i'd do,
Google is bound to throw up some info/guide on it.

The annoying thing is that there wasn't a gasket when I took the old pipe off. Some dodgy shortcut performed before I owned the car I reckon.

I'd imagine if it goes on particular way, it'll be stamped on it, or there will be paper in the box.

Slap it on, it's only a EGR gasket.

You know what, that's what I'm going to do dagnammit! Some on PH are probably bored by my contributions mostly being questions about the Laguna EGR valve (which has been my only real problem with the car thank goodness), so I'm gonna try and put this problem to bed, take a risk and move on.
