Our local council are now charging £36 a year to collect garden waste.

We pay an extortionate amount in council tax, and for what?. Bunch of useless parasites.

Over 50% of your council tax goes straight to the parasite pension pot.

My council tax actually reduced this year, I think they must have made a mistake but im not going to tell them this.

The answer to the OP's question what do we get: Rubbish collected once a month, Garden waste collected which they turn into compost and sell for a profit, one street light between 8 houses erm... there must be more...

To answer the OP - not enough!

As has been said, it gets put into the trough of gold plated pensions, extra public holidays, and, in our 'cash strapped' council, the poor unfortunates who 'couldn't get to work due to snow' - almost half of them for 3 days!- got full pay, despite some living less than 1/2 a mile from their workplace, whilst people working for Sainsbury's, living 10 miles away, walked to work.

Add in the 'Climate Change''Diversity' and 'Fairtrade' guru's, luckily all of whom do feck all, and it doesn't leave many actually doing something useful, though I think they plan to get rid of them.

Time for a revolution!

AS said at the start, it's their pension you are paying for (though I thought it was around 30% not 50%).

Me, I get my black bin collected every two weeks, and my blue bin collected every two weeks. I pay for the brown bin separately.

I live on a private road, no streetlights etc so I don't get anything there either.

A warm feeling that we're keeping the public sector bloated, while ensuring that black muslim one-legged lesbian single mothers can meet up twice per week for free swimming classes.

At least your paying for something!

It does take the piss mind but i was paying £1400 per year for a empty house with nothing inside and nobody in their right mind would live in whilst i sorted planning permission and demolition etc to start a rebuild.
So, i was getting nothing for the pleasure, no bins emptied, road swept, grass cut etc etc

I live on a private road, which is maintained and paid for by the residents, so I get a discount from my council tax.

No, do I fk, I'm joking.

Well, I don't have kids but I don't get a rebate on any kiddiecentric taxation that is applied. Society (big or otherwise) is not like that...

Not to forget that Council Tax is only about 45% of local government funding if you're a particularly well off council. Another 1/3rd from business rates and the rest from central government grants.

yes

But you won't change the system. The system works fine.

You just have to realise for whom it works.

For the area I live in, this is how council tax is spent...

on another page it says Council Tax provides £80.6million of this.

That means that the Tax we put in just about pays for the Benefits scum in our area.

Hope they are enjoying their 50"plasmas, sky tv, free houses and free drugs frown

Are they ALL SCUM ? What proportion of those are REALLY too old, too ill, or too stupid to work, or are stuggling with Mental Illness ? I don't doubt that a proportion of them are stereotypical workshy, benefit fraudsters, but how many aren't ?

Not that useless... biggrin they collect your garden waste... albeit at a price!

Round here it cost roughly that, and you got a special wheelie with a green lid.

Only the green fools took it up.
Sensible residents composted their waste, not 'cos they were green but because they were not giving the b.... Council even more of their hard-earned readies.

Now it is collected fortnightly 'FREE' hehe in our old landfill grey wheelies/grey lids.

The mugs who coughed up now have garden waste on their faces!

Lets have SOME sympathy.

For example lets take bin collections. 10 years ago you had your wheelie bin taken away once a week. Now we have a recycling bin and garden waste taken every 2 weeks. So effectivley they have doubled the number of rounds they have to make. They also have the issue of how to dispose of these various new items they are taking.

In that time wages and fuel costs have risen a fair bit and I would suggest the cost of running those bin collections has gone up significantly more in propertion to previous costs than your council tax.

Having worked in local authorities I am a little biased. What I will say is that some people benefit from Council services more than others. Some people may be having services provided by multiple departments and having a reasonable chunk of money spent on them whilst others may have almost no interaction with the Council at all. My inkling is that many departments (where possible) will focus on the most vulnerable first and leave the ones who can do things themselves to it. Considering PH is full of alpha males its unsurprising most of you probably fall into the latter category.

Children and Adult Services are serious undertakings. Trust me you don't want to be doing some of those jobs and taking on the responsibility. In one of my jobs I often had to visit elderly people in their homes, I would often go to places where said persons house was filthy and hadn't been cleaned for years. The person was usually in a sorry state as well (physical and mental disabilities). Some of the houses I went into - seriously the atmosphere and stench was so bad you had to come out after 20 minutes. We would refer them to Adult Services if required - I have no idea what they did with those people but I bet it wasn't easy, pretty or cheap.

Finally, by all accounts each Council is different and will offer a different level of service. In my local authority job we had a decent sized department offering what I would say was a good service. Some people may have been shocked to see the sizes of similar departments in other councils and the level of service they did or could provide due to a number of reasons. In particular I felt some of the borough councils in London were severely short in areas because each council is relativley small but every problem is probably magnified 5x as much in London.

Hmmm. Not sure it's sensible.

We used to compost using proper compost bins. We had no end of vermin problems. Since we stopped composting & using the green bin, they've virtually all gone from round our house.

Compost bin = mouse/rat hotels.

Business Rates are worse. We pay a lot more and get absolutely nothing in return, not only do we not get our rubbish collected we aren't even allowed to take our office and garden waste to our local tip.
