To a certain degree this is true. The SPECS cameras are not home office aproved to communicate between lanes. Therefore, in theory you can change lanes between cameras and not get caught as the cameras can't "talk" to each other. However, there is a flaw in this theory. The cameras work in pairs and it is impossible to know which ones are paired with subsequent cameras further down the road. So even though you change lanes you may inadvertantly end up getting caught.
But to the original question - yes you can continue at whatever speed you want until the first camera. It is only when you go past the first one that you are in the average speed zone.

I've heard these techniques and they seem to work for ppl. Would never risk it personally! U see some ppl flying down! Not worth it. Ppl exaggerate how much they slow u down. There are 13 miles on the a1m and ppl will say that it adds half an hour to your journey time!! Ha ha do the maths. It takes much less than half an hour to drive through it so even if that section of road wasn't there u wouldn't save half an hour, Nevermind just driving it an extra 20 - 30 mph quicker

I was also thinking beforehand about the cameras working in pairs...and I assume from your post that the cameras could be paired like (for example) 1&4 , 2&5 , 3&6 etc,and so even if changing lanes you could be unlucky and end up in the wrong lane and get done?

They weren't originally type approved for multiple lanes, but they are now, and have been for several years. But to the original question - yes you can continue at whatever speed you want until the first camera. It is only when you go past the first one that you are in the average speed zone.
They are multilane now and have been for quite some time. I recall at the time when they changed it did state changing lane could avoid getting caught they left out the pairing bit though.
I just put cruise on never get caught and where I drive it would be very difficult in trying to go faster as all lanes are doing the same. Still I have seen on quiet days some idiots not slow at all... Possibly the same sort of person who does 45mph everywhere on a and b roads even through 30mph zones I guess they get a nice fine whenever they attempt it and don't understand what they have done wrong.

Re pairing you will spot at night some cameras have the road ahead of them lit up by floodlights that look as though they are for the workers, theres a bit of a clue there !!!

But then you have to adjust it as others use their speedo's exactly.I wish I had the adaptive cruise control on new BMW's which slows you and accelerates you to your speed by keeping the dstance to the car infront constant.

- can't wait until that kind of thing is available on peasant cars. (but then I discovered yesterday I don't even have coat hooks in my car, so I might have a while to wait
