What Automotive Books?

Hi PHers,

Mods: not sure where to put this, so please move to appropriate section if required.


So, I've always wanted to build/ restore my own car one day.


Assuming I wouldn't know where to start, I'd like to do some 'home reading', before eventually getting myself enrolled on some evening courses once things at work ease up a bit.

Can you guys recommend to me some good books that would help me gain an understanding in 'car mechanics' & 'automotive engineering'?


A quick search shows the 'Hilliers Fundamentals' books to be a good place to start, and I was wondering if there are any others I should be looking at. Ofcourse, getting the 'Haynes Manual' for the car of choice is a must.

Hilliers Fundamentals of Motor Vehicle Technology is in my eyes the best book to start off with. It takes you through all the basics on how vehicles are made and how they work. Going into detail of how various vehicle systems work.

I'll give the Hilliers books a read.

I will have to check out some of the Veloce stuff as well. Their website looked like it had a fairly nice selection on there. Anything specific I should look for?
