Barcelona help!!
Discussion
Hi, me and miss stickyr6 are going to Barcelona in august, were spending 4 days here then moving on the Perpignan in France for another 4 to meet up with her family..but here's the thing..
I want to find a nice quirky little hotel with a nice balcony in barca, nothings set in stone yet so this is me just trying to plan ahead.
so if you know of or have heard of a nice hotel please let me know, we've been told to stay in the H10 Montcada Hotel which looks really nice but not romantic or rustic enough but the location looks perfect..
anyway like I said, just trying to plan ahead so any advice on the hotel would really help.. THANK YOU!

Wife and I went to Barcelona for four nights in March, had a great time. We stayed at the Hotel Montecarlo (they have a website). We booked direct with them. You have to pay up front with no cancellation option. They offer a B&B service only. Hotel is located on La Ramblas near Barcelona's main Catayluna Square which is the main hub for all the local transportation too, so in our view the hotel was ideally located.
We had a twin room at the top and front of the hotel. It had a small balcony overlooking La Ramblas. We thought it could be noisy but the double glazing worked very well. The room was of a really good standard too: entered into a small sitting room with TV, off which were the bedroom and also the bathroom, with a spa bath! We didn't particularly book a room of this standard but that's what we got.
The staff were excellent and really friendly, spoke good English.
Aside from the hotel, there's a Barcelona tourism website with great information. We'd recommend taking one or more of the guided walks. We did the morning Old Town walk, excellent, lasted two hours. We booked this from the UK before we left. We also got the tourist bus tickets for two days, good value and gets you to all the main tourist sites.
As for restaurants there are loads, and the nearer you are to La Ramblas the more you pay for deteriorating quality. However, can recommend The Attic restaurant (they have a website) near to the top of La Ramblas and it's almost beside our hotel. If you want to splash out try Restaurant Set Portes near the marina: it's been there since the mid 1800s !

I live in Barcelona, so am not great on hotels...
Firstly.. Las Ramblas... don´t play the silly games, hands in pockets, wallet in front pocket... don´t look like a tourist and life will be fine. also watch for pickpockets on the metro.. you´ll see them, but they do target stag do´ss and obvious tourist as easy prey
Places to see:
The bus tours.. about €22 a day and really good..
Sagrada Familla - incredible inside..
Casa Mila - roof terrace is very cool
Casa Batillo - not as good in my opinion
Parc Guell - great place....
Olympic Museum €3 which is next to olympic stadium
Castle on Mont Juic - good views
Tibidabo - Theme park overlooking Barcelona
The beach... stretches for a couple of miles and is nice and sandy
bars.... tourist areas are way more expensive...Chiringuito´s are now open on the beach but they are pricey.
Restaurants.. Some nice ones in Born, Eixample (loads here and just north of Plaça Cataluyna. Or just get tapas anywhere
And the champanaria.... €0.80 for a glass of cava, or €5 a bottle.. you have to have food... Ask at the hotel but it´s cracking fun and full of locals.. and packed!!
For the more refined: there are some great roof terraces to have drinks in August.. Oh and make sure that your hotel room has air con.
Other places to see:
Sitges is great
Taragona
Montserrat
As for restaurants, steer clear of Las Ramblas, Exaimple, Born and Ravel hold much better fare

Considered a vacation apartment instead of a hotel?

Great city... once you get away from la rambla

Don't wear shorts if you can possibly avoid it - they're an obvious "I'm a tourist, rob me" thing. Ditto sandals. Dress like you would at home, and keep your hands in your pockets.
And when the prostitutes scream "HEY BABEEEE! WANNA f
k?" and then goose you, they're just being friendly.

Don't worry about the scare stories of pickpockets. Didn't have any issues at all walking around Las Ramblas in full tourist gear on a stag do. No worse than any other city in my opinion.
Not saying to be wreckless, but don't worry about it too much.
A friend of mine recently came back from a stag do in Barcelona. 11 of the party of 12 had something stolen during the 4 days they were there. One of them was robbed 3 times in one 24 hour period. My friend had his iPhone stolen and came back to a £240 phone bill as I assume they have a premium rate number set up. Didn't help that they were staying pretty much on Las Ramblas and were probably drunk most of the time they were there but still. Not saying to be wreckless, but don't worry about it too much.

I felt the same after a 7 day stay without any problems - and then saw someone having their pocket dipped into in broad daylight at a ticket machine on our last morning (I know it goes on in all big cities, but I've never seen it happening so blatently!)... It was a big wake-up call having concluded that Las Ramblas was the only problem area (we were miles away at the time)...Not saying to be wreckless, but don't worry about it too much.
I love the place (to the point I've seriously considered relocating there if an opportunity arises) but be very aware that the theives really do prey on people dropping their guard - you really do have to be diligent at all times!
WOW, i had heard a few stories about pick pockets etc but like everyone is saying common sense should keep us ok, i had heard stories of lads cutting hand bag straps and running off to an awaiting scooter..
but on a lighter note some of the hotels and resturants that have been recommended on here look amazing and im actually looking forward to it even more now, every place that somone has suggested ive looked up on google, so thankyou everyone for you time to help, keep them coming though because were still yet to pick...

When I went (about 18 months ago) we stayed in the Diagonal Zero - probably not what you're looking for from your description, but I'd certainly recommend to anyone who wants a decent base, being very near a metro station. We had a nose round the Silken Diagonal too (different ownership, same road) and concluded (before the missus caught the mental) that we'd probably give that a go if and when we fancied a weekend break, as it seemed lovely, a little more 'romantic' and a bit closer to the centre!....
Staff were very good at Diagonal Zero and we got upgraded to a luxury suite which was a lovely room and came with access to a rooftop bar with all the Rioja and Chorizo I could stomach for breakfast!

My favourite place in the world. Went there for four days a few years ago and didn't get to do or see half of the things we wanted to.
We'll go back in a couple of years and this is where we'll stay http://www.hotelmiramarbarcelona.es/en/ Not too close to the centre but as a place to relax the rest of the time it doesn't look like it can be beaten
