Long V Short Oil Filter

What are the benefits of the long or short oil filters that are available ?

I normally fit a Long one obtained from the local landy dealer. Got one from a TVR place and it is the Shorter type. Other than the Physical space that is available why are there two types ? Looking at filters available for other engine types it seems to be fairly common to have two sizes.

I use a short filter so that it doesn't foul the chassis as it sits on the sandwich plate for the oil cooler that I run.

I get them from the LR dealer. Think its ERR3349 or similar. Fitted to pre cat and 500 with no issues.

Use the biggest you can.. that way you get the max surface area of filter... so it will last longer and flow better
