I have decided to start playing golf again after a lay off of 20 or so years. Never played regularly enough to be any good, just the monthly Pub Golf Society jaunts and hacking around some nice courses in 90+ strokes paperbag

My problem is, many moons ago I gave away my John Letters clubs to a dog charity. So now I am clubless.

Tomorrow I am booked in for a club fitting session and was thinking am I in danger of putting (no pun intended) the cart before the horse, or would correctly fitted clubs be the correct start... any thoughts?

Not needed so early in playing again. (Unless your tall) No two swings will be the same until things get bedded in.
Get a set that feels/looks right to you. Most importantly, enjoy it!

Get on eBay, my playing partner bought a set of letters for about £40, you're bound to find a set of your old clubs for cheaps.

I bought a set of quite expensive Mizuno irons with an exrta inch as I'm similarly impressivley, but no overly, massive smile

I'm still $hit and not played for over a year.

I'd probably sell em to you if it were logistically doable. I'd rather have the cash to spend on me motorbike.

Great advice.....don't waste any time with club fitting at this stage. Just go out and enjoy yourself. I'd recommend picking up a set of modern cavity backs with steel shafts (unless you are old and/or weak). If you get back into it you can then look at getting some custom clubs....club fitters vary massively....some people are scientific and some people do it by eye. IMHO the former is the better. The type of shaft you use it's absolutely crucial not just the length and lie.

Thanks for the replies folks. Fitting cancelled. EBay has a huge choice, totally confused.

First step now is an EBay purchase, then book half a dozen lessons and see how it goes!

Here you go,

This isn't an ad by the way, they aren't actually for sale but if you're passing Leeds at any point you can have a look and I'm happy to let them go (or keep em!)

They are Mizuno T-Zoid Pro 2 and I've got SW to 9 iron. Extra inch on the shaft, like you I'm a very healthy 6'4" biggrin

I bought em after reading a lot of reviews and these are well thought of (apparantly). I'm still $hit though smile

They're a bit mucky as I never really cleaned them but in really very good condition and would scrub up nicely. Grips are all in excellent nick.

I paid £250 odd for them so I'll let you ponder on it.

Again, I must reiterate, you could have the best clubs in the world. A half decent golfer with a full set from argos or lidl would still kick your arris smile

"in the hole!!!!!!"

I don't know what you play off but if you are playing with a set of what look like a muscle back/blade forged club head you need to be off single digits ! They're great clubs if you hit it right but don't exactly have a massive sweat spot ? I am guessing you play off rather more judging by how dirty that club head is ?

Ha. Well, whatdya know :-)

Never even crossed my tiny mind that. I have noticed that when at the driving range i can consistently hit very nice, long shots with these clubs. It all goes to poop on a course though which is probably due to not having controlled conditions, so to speak.

What sort of clubs are the most forgiving then? I may flog these and 'downgrade'.

Any set that is "cast" and not forged will be more forgiving. Them T-Zoids bring back some memories, everybody had a set accept me because they didn't make them in left handed mad

As already said, no point wasting time and money on club fitting until your swing is consistant and you play regular enough to make it worth while.
Pop into a golf range and try some out but on the range, not a computerised jobbie.
Ranges usually sell clubs (new & used) and usually let you try them out before you buy.

I know people playing in single figure h'caps with off the shelf clubs.

Me too.

But on the other hand, I've got a mate that spends a small fortune every few months getting newer/Better clubs. I keep telling him that his swing will never have time to settle. "All the Gear, No Idea" We call him. smile

That 1 iron has hardly been used, tart wink

Just to show you dont't have to have the most expensive gear out there, I play off scratch and my putter cost me a tenner. It's chipped, dented and scratched but I wouldn't swap it for anything biggrin

Use what ever you feel comfy with.
