Spend my money for me!

Morning all,

I've decided to head to Harrison Cameras in Sheffield this afternoon to buy myself a tele lens. I currently only have a 18-55 kit and 50mm 1.8 for my D5000, and with upcoming trips to Nurburgring, Le Mans, bike races and air shows I've decided I need some more girth in my bag

Obvious choice is the Nikon 55-300 VR new at £250, but can you camera gurus advise of any s/h bargains I chould be looking at on Harrison's s/h page?

I don't know if they have one but when I was weighing up a tele photo I read a lot of comparisons between the 70-300 VR and the 55-300 VR. I opted to pay a little more for the 70-300 as the reviews suggested it was a sharper lens. I think I paid £300 from Ffordes for a lightly used one. Arrived the next day. I'm extremely happy with it though I have never used the 55 so can't compare.

ETA, I was trying to find some example shots on my FlickR account but I don't think I've uploaded any yet (only had it a couple of weeks). This is a shot from my 365 using the 70-300, albeit at it's widest end.

I think thats the best option, but I didnt see whether that was the G VR one

I would assume not at that price. They're £400 new and generally £250-£350 used. Worth it though IMO...

That's the discontinued ED. It was better than the £99 G but I found mine soft at 300mm and lots of CA. Have the 70-300VR now and very pleased with it.

Thanks for the advice chaps. I ended up with a new 55-300 VR after all; I didn't realise the lenses with motors in them would work on a D300 D90 etc, so when upgrade time comes I can still use my new lens as well as getting full functionality on the D5000.

Also, how good is VR?! I've got the kit 18-55 with VR which I could never really notice working, but at 300mm it works fantastically. With it turned off I lose so much sharpness, even in bright light. Well chuffed
