This will be interesting, so see what people's experiences are.
This (well, a J-reg one just like it) was my worst driving experience ever by a country mile.
I'm not being deliberately controversial here, I'm telling the straight-up truth!! All the same, I imagine this will get a few feathers ruffled...

http://www.cheapcarinsuranceforyoungdrivers-uk.com...

No power despite being a 1.6, steering set in concrete, seat like sitting on two planks of wood, gearchange like stirring a bucket of rocks, nasty nasty interior.
It was honestly worse to drive in every conceivable way than a ford transit I later borrowed that was made around the same year. The girl who owned the escort was beautiful though!! I guess that's something.....

A VW camper van. Awful... in fact, I'd go as far as to say downright dangerous.

Massive play in the steering, like a huge dead zone in the centre. When you get out of the dead zone the steering is so heavy that you need to be a champion bodybuilder to get it to move. Brakes? Near non -existent, and ineffectual. Power? less than a Belgian MP. It had holes in the floor that the pedals poke through, which were just holes in the floor. Nothing behind the holes, so if it rained your feet would get wet no doubt. No heating to speak of, apart from a petrol heater, and the whole thing rattled like a huge coffee can with marbles in it. The example I drove was built in Brazil and was two years old.

It also had no crumple zone or crash protection to speak of. If I were in the unfortunate position to have a car heading straight for me then I would have died. No secondary safety, so I couldn't steer out of the way, and no primary safety so I would have been squashed by the bulkhead.

Dangerous horrid things.

New Fiat Panda. It was actually a nice enough car but the driving position crippled my right ankle and all of the controls were too light and felt like crap to use.

Renault 5

Vague gearbox, gutless, rolls, doesn't stop.

Driving it through France felt very dangerous, like being shot out a cannon in a tin bean can.(yes it did hit 80mph.)

Corsa 1.0 12v with the horrid auto steptronic? gearbox. limp engine, ponderous gearbox. Bubble shape 1.0 micra with the cvt absolutly runs rings around it.

Awful car. Why give customers of 1.0 auto city cars the choice of changing manually? Just give it a good auto. The micras CVT was fantastic to 50mph in and out of the city.

In a Fiat Stilo of about 04/05 vintage, i had the urge to steer it off the road and into the scenery as it seemed a better option than carrying on driving it. But the worst was a Citroen Picasso diesel auto. Still the only car that has made be feel car sick while driving.

2004 Citroen C3 Diesel.

The noisiest, harshest, nastiest engine in a so-called 'modern' era car I have ever come across. Very much sat on the seats as opposed to in them, and the interior appeared to have been made out of recycled yoghurt pots and sack-cloth. Stank of sweat/tobacco/diesel combo.

Other than that, not a bad car.

Hahahaha!!! My dad had a 1974 VW Camper (or transporter to give it its proper name) which probably shared all the characteristics you mention of the one you drove!!
But I will always have fond memories of it for all the family holidays it took us on without (always) breaking down, and it's probably wholly responsible for my huge obsession with all VWs air and water that continues to this day. I've never driven one, and yes I imagine they are pretty hopeless as you say, but surely that's missing the point somewhat with a vehicle like that?? At one point didn't all vans have flat fronts, hopeless brakes, no power, terrifying steering etc.......??

Either a VW Camper, as above, brakes and steering non existent. And I still took it on the Motorway, which way hairy as it'd only reach 70 downhill with a following wind.

or a Ford KA which I was given a few years ago as a (dis)courtesy car whilst mine was having some work done, bloody horrible, I hated the fact that the dash was so plain, just a speedo and a clock (what can I say, I like rev counters) the bodyroll when cornering or changing lanes made me feel a bit seasick it had no power at all and seemed to scream in all gears. Maybe I just got a crap one, but I hated it.

Haven't driven anything bad really. If I was to choose though I'd probably say the Audi A6 TDi I drove, didn't gel well with it and I just ain't the biggest fan of diesels.

Not driven a huge amount of cars, only 30-40 different makes and models. By far the worst has to be the 1 litre 206 that my brother had.

God awful POS, vague steering, horrible beyond belief gearbox and stty build quality. My sister also has one but hers is a 206cc, its a 1.6 but the heavy roof makes it feel almost as slow as the 1 litre.

Old cars; VW Beetle/Morris Minor - unbelievably sh*t

"Modern" cars - Ford 4WD thing, Mercedes ML - both insults to the processes of accelerating, braking and cornering

A brand new (at the time) poverty spec, grey, Vauxhall Astra courtesy car. I've certainly driven worse cars in terms of reliability, features, etc, but they at least had some kind of character. This was such a dull non-entity, built for people with zero interest in cars whose idea of excitement is buying a new cardigan.

Had a 1600GT Beetle and loved the way it drove, it was like being in a little humming hover-pod with a hypnotic sound. Pretty quick off the mark too. Was a bit hard getting up iced-up roads on a hill, mind. hehe
