Training as an electrician

Having just spent the last couple of days moving a few sockets and installing a few more, I was musing at the likelyhood of getting a formal qualification as a spark.

Does anyone know what's involved? Can I do a day a week at my local tech college and a do the paperwork in the evenings? Where do I start?

Before I go any further, I have no intention of making this a career, I would just like to learn more (and properly) for my own ends. I have a successful business and don't want to be a sparky, but it might provide a few beer vouchers helping out my friends once in a while.

Best way is to do the city and guilds 2330 (soon to change to the 2357) over 3 yrs 2 nights a wk or 1 day. Doing work in peoples homes requires that you join up with a scheme niceic etc, to self certify your own work then pass on the test results. The problem with working in domestic properties is that quite often the circuit you are making alterations too is not in a good condition to start with, and the only way to verify this it is to test it with a multi function tester £500-700. You would be held liable for the whole circuit you make alterations to if anything goes wrong.
