crunching reverse

my reverse always crunches do they all do this or do i need it looked at is it worth checking oil level

All tvrs do this , engage a forward gear before engaging reverse.

crunch is (IIRC) due to reverse not having a syncromesh - be gentle and slip into 5th first. 5th is most useful as its then gently back to slip into reverse.

1st is best for a T5 to avoid crunch in reverse.

Have always been told that 5th is weak regardless of torque ie just the mechanism but I have never seen one in bits.

4th to reverse is what I use. 5th is weak and using 1st will wear the syncro faster as you engage this the most before pulling away etc.

I find you don't even need to go into a gear, just nudge the gear lever left, then right and back into reverse quickly and no crunch .

Of course you are all welcome to stick it wherever you like...
but the 'official' advice from page 21 of the Owners Handbook is "To engage reverse gear smoothly, we recommend that you put the car into fifth gear and then pull back into reverse. Only engage reverse whilst the car is stationary"

That's all very well but I am able to engage reverse without going into any gear first which is surely preferable?

i seem to put it in to 4th then fast to reverse with no crunch seems to be the ticket
