I have just called Tesco Insurance to change the insurance cover to the ZS that I have just bought and they are insisting that a tracker is fitted to the car before they cover it for theft.

Is this normal or just something that they have decided to do?

MG ZS?

If so then I think thats a little over the top. Just go elsewhere.

As above. Just say that you're not going to do that, and have spoken to a number of other insurers that will cover you. Do some homework and find out which insurers will cover you, and the prices involved- if your current insurer won't budge then just go elsewhere.

Thanks guys, glad it wasn't just me that thought it was odd!

Adrian Flux have just quoted me at an astronomical rate so will do some shopping around so I can go back armed and primed for an argument!

Join the MGOC and try Lancaster - they have a special policy just for MGs.

I've never had a quote worth considering from Adrian Flux, but I'm sure gocompare and confused will sort you out with a quick idea of prices and levels of cover.

Me neither, but they do have a bloody good online car magazine, Influx, that they'll email you every week if you sign up to their mailing list. it's actually well-written, well-photographed stuff. Just a pity their quotes are extortionate.

I once was insuring a car, agent had come back from their underwriter with terms, I accepted the terms, at the end of conversation the agent said, "Oh, and you'll need to put a tracker on it."
I said, "Forget it. It's extra weight, it drains the battery, I'm not putting one on."
Immediately, without checking with underwriter, agent replied, "Oh, all right then, you don't need a tracker."

Nice to know, will try arguing that its a ridiculous thing to ask for a £1500 car. Apparently I will still have accident cover but they wont cover theft until I have proved the tracker has been fitted.

Different underwriters will have different deals with their agents. In my case, it may have been "Try to get customer to fit tracker, but not absolutely required."

I had this years ago when I changed vehicle to an Impreza Turbo mid-year, Churchill accepted the change but insisted it had to have a tracker and kept asking for proof it was operational. It actually did have a tracker fitted but Tracker UK (or whatever they're called) wanted IIRC £150 to register it to me and run it for a year and also said it needed a new battery as over 5 years old which was another £100 or so. No way I was paying this so I was just careful about where I parked it and changed insurer at renewal, already had a Disc-lok, Thatcham 1 alarm/immob and was garaged at night, secure work car park in day.

I used to work for UKI - who administers insurance for Tesco and Churchill. This was a prerequisite for most of the MG ZR, ZS & ZT range. The excuse we used to give to punters was that the details of how to bypass the MG security was released over the internet some years ago and they had a spate of cars go missing and ended up paying out shed loads.
To be honest though, I always assumed it was a load of old bollcks though.

Re, Tracker, ask them how many Police forces have the equipment now...Met Traffic cars have not had it for some years now.

I read that too. I'm in the same situation and given the choice between Flux and other companies I would go with Flux, but the price is always sky high, despite claiming to specialise in high performance cars for young drivers. Admiral always come up trumps for me.
Just to keep it slightly on topic; I don't have a tracker wink

You are about 3 years out of date smile Tesco and RBSI divorced, and now Tesco is sleeping with Ageas who used to be Fortis. Although the motor side is a panel of insurers. RBS still administer the system.

Tracker is owned by RBS (clue). So may be this is a hangover from those days. I thought it was triggered by value, not make.

Tesco told me that this has been dictated by the underwriters and is based on the insurance group. Could smell st though as my old omega was a couple of groups higher than the ZS and I was never asked to install a tracker.

Going to speak to Lancasters on Monday.
