Thinking of going on my first track day this summer. The car is nothing special, just a standard hatchback.

Does anyone have recommendations for good instructors, given that it will be my first track day so I suspect it'll be all about learning the basics (lines, speed, braking points etc.)

On another note, if anyone else is in the same position as me, there's quite a useful webpage about what to expect/prepare for your first track day here - http://www.stevecarter.com/track-day-beginners.htm

If you are not sure the best thing might be to start with an airfield day (still feels like a circuit even though its made up for the day using perimeter roads and cones on the runway) with someone like motor sports events. They will help you with advice and have instructors available for a very small fee so you can get some driving tips in the car.

Try one of the msv events. I had tuition at one several years ago and it was quite enlightening. If i remember correctly the cost of a couple of laps tuition was only £20 or so. Bargain really as it probably saved me more on tyres and brakes.

Tuition is free at Apex Trackdays event for the first 20 minute session. After that it is £25 for each 20 minute session.

You should be getting free familiarisation on any good event. After that the instructors available through the organiser should be plenty good enough for your first time.

MSV are excellent and have a good group of (good value) instructors. They also have 'novice' days where track time is more carefully managed to mitigate man demanding too much from his machine.

Goldtrack days are good as they always have a qualified instructor to jump in with you for a few laps and they have never charged me. Also I would reccomend go for a TDay with 2 groups rather than an open pit lane so that you arent in with the fast machines straight away.

Happy driving!
